Marie Angelique Gauthier is a descendant of an Acadian

Marie Angelique Gauthier was born on March 14, 1771 on the Riviere St Jean in New Brunswick, the daughter of Joseph Gauthier and Élisabeth Catherine Vienneau^[1]. "Riviere St Jean" included many settlements along the Saint John River, but Marie was probably born in the village of Maugerville, New Brunswick (just outside Fredericton) where her parents were married in 1770.

Marie's marriage date is unknown, but she and her husband Mathurin Guillaume Bristol had 5 known children:

Research Notes

Marie was baptized with the name Angelique but her name was written as Marie in her childrens' marriage records and her husband's burial record. Her brother Joseph's baptism is recorded on the same page just above her baptism record.

The following evidence points to Marie Gauthier, wife of Mathurin Bristol, being the daughter of Joseph Gauthier and Élisabeth Catherine Vienneau:

• In the marriage record of her son Elie Bristol to Adelaide Lirette, the groom's witnesses were "Francois Vieneau, oncle" and "Charles Babineau, cousin". Francois Vieneau is actually Elie's great-uncle and Marie Angelique Gauthier's uncle François Vienneau (1762-1844). This Francois Vienneau and his son also named Francois are actually the only two known adult Francois Vienneaus in Acadia at the time, so this is good evidence that Marie Gauthier is the daughter of Elisabeth Catherine Vienneau.

• In the marriage record of her grandson François Xavier Bristol and his wife Henriette Robichaud, a dispensation was granted for 3rd degree and 4th degree of consanguinity (view relationship). For the 3rd degree relationship, they were 2nd cousins through Élisabeth Catherine Vienneau.

• In the marriage record of her niece Marie Gauthier to Simon Lirette, one of their witnesses was "Joseph Bristol, cousin" (Joseph Bristol was the son of Marie Angelique Gauthier). They were first cousins through Élisabeth Catherine Vienneau (view relationship). Marie was the daughter of Joseph Toussaint Gauthier (the brother of Marie Angelique Gauthier), the son of Joseph Gauthier and Élisabeth Catherine Vienneau.

• In her husband Mathurin Bristol's burial record, the witnesses were Francois Leblanc and Pierre Richard. Francois Leblanc could be the husband of Marie's half-sister Euphrosine Hebert.
