Biography

Sally was born reportedly on 2 October 1761 probably in Louisa County, Virginia.

She married James Smith.

They removed to Kentucky around 1796, finally settling in Hardin County on Mill Creek.

Sally died on 23 January 1841 in Hardin County and was buried there in Maffet Cemetery.[1]

Research Notes

Three original records to confirm that Nicholas Gentry was Sarah's father are depositions of Nancy (Gentry) Bailey, Washington Smith and William Smith in Nancy's application for a widow's pension due to her husband's Revolutionary War service.[2] Both men state that Nancy was born Nancy Gentry. Washington states that his father was James Smith and that his mother's maiden name was Sally Gentry, who was sister to Nancy. William also stated that his father was James Smith and that Nancy was his "mother's sister." Nancy's own deposition states that her father was Nicholas Gentry and that she had a brother John Gentry.
