Biography

Daughter of James Gentry.

244 THE GENTRY FAMILY IN AMERICA 186. JAMES GENTRY, of Albemarle Co., Va. (i8s) George III, James II. Born in Hanover Co., Va., in 1757 and died June 22, 1851 in Albemarle Co., at the age of 94 years. His wife, Mary Hicks, died in 1835. He enlisted in the Continental Army from Hanover Co., Va., for three years on Jan. 11, 1777, and was discharged Jan. 10, 1780, near Morristown, N. J. He served as private and Corporal in Captain Eddin's Company, in Colonel Charles Harrison's ist Continental Artillery and was in the battle of Monmouth. In 1787 he removed to Albemarle Co. and became a prosperous farmer, owning considerable land and negroes. He drew a pension as a Revolutionary soldier until his death. He was a great worker in the Methodist Church and was a prominent class leader for years. He built a church on his land and deeded it to the M. E. Church. His will was probated July 7, 185 1, in which he named as legatees his son George, Nancy Simmons, Elizabeth Harvey, James and Dorthy Polly Harvey. It appears that his son John was not mentioned in his will but the court reported to the U.S. Pension Office that his surviving children Oct. 6, 1851, were John, James, Polly and Betsie Harvey. His will provided that Austin Gentry and Peter Gibson be his executors, if John Gentry would go security for his son Austin.

Her death: Had to have occurred after 1870. She is listed living with her son Whitelow and family in the 1870 Census for Lincoln county, Missouri.

Gentry-2714 and Gentry-1867 appear to represent the same person because: I did not find Gentry-1867 before creating a new one -- probably because I have a different death date for her. In any case, this is the same Elizabeth Harvey who married Martin D. Harvey.

Please see bio info I've included.
