Cross of St George
Charles Gerard PC was born in England.

Charles Gerard, 1st Baron Gerard of Brandon later 1st Earl of Macclesfield, PC was the son of Sir Charles Gerard of Halsall, co. Lancaster and Penelope Fitton, da. of Sir Edward Fitton, 1st Bt. of Gawsworth, Cheshire and Anne Barret, da. of James Barret. He m. Jane, daughter of Pierre de Civelle, a Frenchman resident in England. Little is known of her except that in 1663 she was dismissed by Charles II from attendance on the queen for tattling to her about Lady Castlemaine, and that on one occasion while being carried in her chair through the city she was mistaken for the Duchess of Portsmouth, saluted as the French whore, and mobbed by the populace. They had two sons and three daughters:

  1. Charles (d. 1701), 2nd Earl of Macclesfield
  2. Fitton (d. 1702), 3rd Earl of Macclesfield
  3. Elizabeth, who married Digby, fifth lord Gerard of Bromley, and was buried in Westminster Abbey
  4. Charlotte
  5. Anne

He was a supporter of the King during the civil war, raised to the peerage on 8 Nov 1645 as Baron Gerard of Brandon, of Brandon in the County of Suffolk and in 21 Jul 1679 Viscount Brandon, of Brandon in the County of Suffolk, and Earl of Macclesfield.

Two acts of Parliament refer to the naturalisation of Charles, Lord Gerard's Children. The first, in December 1660, refers to "three children of Charles Lord Gerard of Brandon... all born abroad." [1]. The second in 1677 refers only to two, Charles and Elizabeth. [2] He married Jeanne de Civelle "before Dec. 1, 1656" The eldest son was born "before 1659"; the second son "before 1669". [3] Thus we might surmise that the children were born as follows: Charles (1656), Elizabeth (1657), Fitton (1658), Charlotte (1659), Anne (1660).
