Ebenezer Gilbert was born at Cornwall, Orange, New York in 1734. He was the son of Caleb Gilbert and Phebe Carpenter. Ebenezer married Ruth Carpenter about 1758 at Goshen, Orange, New York. He passed away about 1790[1] and Ruth about 1802.

Ebenezer's wife, Ruth Gilbert, is recorded on the 1790 census for New Paltz, New York with two children, possibly her youngest sons, Joseph and Daniel:

I leave to my two sons, Ebenezer and Stephen, the farm or Plantation whereon I now live, and as soon as they are of age they shall pay to my sons John and Josiah œ10 each. I leave to my daughter, Phebe Goldsmith, 20 shillings gs. All the rest of my estate I leave to my sons John and Jeremiah and my daughter, Hannah Gilbert. I make Silas Person [Pierson?] and Samuel Birdseye executors. Witnesses, Luke Clarke, Mary Mesure, Fletcher Matthews[6]
