Maude was born March 30, 1883 in Miltonvale, Kansas to Martin B Gilchrist and Eliza Virginia Sump. She was the only child born of this union, but had an adopted brother, Frank Cochran who was born as a cousin (common knowledge among her children, but afraid a connection still needs to researched).
Maude moved to May Day, Kansas in 1902 with her parents and helped them operate the May Day store. Maude and Albert Sump were married in the hall over the Gilchrist store on November 2, 1904 by Rev. Homer Wroten at noon. Otto Sump, brother of Albert acted as best man and Miss Margaret Lowry was bridesmaid. Forty guests were present.
Maude was very proud of her vegetable garden and flowers. She liked to try a new vegetable in her garden each spring. She also made many quilts and enjoyed crocheting, her great granddaughter still has a delicate lace doily she made (2017). She also enjoyed fishing, which she did in Fancy Creek close to her home.
Maude passed June 29, 1963
