Biography

Nancy Alletha Gilcrease/Gilchrist was born on 09 October 1847 in Jackson, Clarke County, Alabama, United States. The date and place of her birth were recorded on a petition she made for a widow's pension she made after the death of her second husband. (Two pages from this file can be viewed on her Find A Grave memorial.) Her headstone, a photograph of which can also be viewed on her Find A Grave memorial, was erroneously engraved with the birth year of 1845.[1]

She was the daughter of Edmond Missen Gilcrease (abt.1818-abt.1870) and Mary (Inglet) Gilcrease (1825-bef.1880). The petition for a widow's pension mentioned above, also recorded the name of her father.

She was enumerated in the 1850 United States Census record living with her parents in Black Bluff, Sumter County, Alabama. At the time, she was six months old. (This family experienced name spelling changes through the years. Records are found in many variations and descendents use several variations, including Kilcrease, Gilcrease, Gilchrist, Gilchrest, and Gilcrest.)[2]

When she was ten years old, she and her family were enumerated on the 1860 United States Census living in Ashville, St. Clair County, Alabama. [3]

Nancy Alletha Gilcrease/Gilchrist first married John Ambrose Gilcrease/Gilchrist on 05 May 1865 In Clarke County, Alabama. W. H. Waite, Justice of the Peace, presided over their nuptials. Their last names were the same and it is possible they were related but a common ancestor has not been currently confirmed. [4]

Together John Ambrose and Nancy Alletha Gilcrease/Gilchrist were the parents of at least seven children. Sons John W. and Edmond M. were enumerated with them on the 1870 United States Census at which time the family was living in Good Springs, Clarke County, Alabama. [5]

Children enumerated with them on the 1880 United States Census were Willie, Edward, Savillia, and Johnny. This census record contains some inaccuracies but it is likely it was the census record of this John A. Gilchrist and his family. There were similar discrepancies in the record of his brother/neighbor Bart Gilchrist, so it is possible the information was supplied by someone who did not know the families' details well. In 1880 the family was living in Jackson, Clarke County, Alabama.[6]

There were at least two other children who died young and whose names are not known but about whom we know about because on the 1900 United States Census, Nancy said she had born seven children, five of whom were still alive.[7]

Between 1882–1883, Nancy's husband John A. Gilchrist died.

After John's death, Nancy married Andrew J. Drury on 14 January 1885. They were enumerated together in the 1900 United States Census for Clarke County, Alabama, along with Nancy's daughter, Francis M.[7] Andrew Jackson Drury died on 30 March 1903 in Clarke County, Alabama.[8] In 1903, Nancy Alletha Drury petitioned for a widow's pension because her deceased husband A. J. Drury was a Civil War Veteran. A question on the petition asked if she had ever been married before and, if so, to give the name of her former husband, and the date and place of their marriage. Two pages of this file were shared on her memorial at the Find A Grave website.[1] The full file may be viewed by subscribers at Ancestry.com.[9]

In 1910, according to the United States Census taken that year, Nancy was widowed and was living with her son Edmund Messer Gilchrist in Grove Hill, Clarke County, Alabama.[10]

In 1920, according to the United States Census taken that year, she was living with her daughter Francis Matilda Gilchrist Mott in Grove Hill, Clarke County, Alabama. [11]

Nancy Alletha (Gilcrease/Gilchrist) Drury passed away about 1920, according to her gravemarker, and ws buried at Magnolia Cemetery, Grove Hill, Clarke County, Alabama.[1] The exact date of her death is not known.

Gilcrease-73 and Gilchrest-42 appear to represent the same person because: I know we have name differences, but that's because the name Gilchrest/Gilcrease/Gilchrist appears so many different ways on so many different records, but these two women are the same person--they married the same men, had the same children, had the same parents. Please read my biography of Gilcrease-73 and reconsider the merge you previously rejected. By the way, we are cousins according to our genealogies and DNA.
Gilcrease-73 and Gilchrest-42 do not represent the same person because: Not the same person. Maiden names are different. Nancy Drury verses Nancy Gilcrease. Different husbands. Different spellings.
