Biography

Joseph Gilkes was born about 1786 in Middlesex, England. He resided in Stepney, Mile End New Town, as documented in the 1841 England Census record. Joseph was 55 years old at the time of the 1841 Census, his reported age inferring a birth year about 1786. His parentage is pending additional research.

Joseph married Mary Porter on June 8, 1806 in St George in the East Tower Hamlets, England. They were both from the same parish, Joseph identified as a bachelor and Mary Porter a spinster. They had a least one child: Joseph Gilkes [Jr.].

In the 1841 England Census, Joseph not only was listed as being age 55, but also living alone (without his wife). It is presumed his wife Mary must have passed away before this Census.

In the 1843 UK City and County Directory [Commercial Director for London and Greater London], Joseph lived on Grey's Inn Road and his occupation described as "cheesemong," i.e. someone who sells cheese and other dairy products.^[1]

Joseph passed away after 1843, the year he is listed in the City/County Directory above mentioned.
