Biography

The surname was originally spelled Gilkey but after settling in Greenup County, Kentucky the family patriarch, Edward Gilkey, adopted the use of the spelling Guilkey. Many of his descendants continued using the Guilkey spelling variation although in the twentieth century the family returned to the original Gilkey spelling.

The Cartwright surname has many variations and was originally Dutch. Some of the assorted spellings are: Kortright, Cortright, Cutright etc.

She was born about 1798 based on her age as 20 when she married in 1818.

Sarah Gilkey married Levi Cartwright 12 March 1818, Greenup County, Kentucky. [1]

Sally Cartwright, wife of Levi Cartwright was named as one of the heirs of Edward Gilkey in 1843, Greenup County, Kentucky. At that time she was living outside the state of Kentucky. [2]

She married second on 10 July 1844 in Independence County, Arkansas Elijah Nipp.[3]

In 1850 as Sarah Nipp she was head of a household in Izard County, Arkansas.[4]

The family of Sarah Gilkey Cartwright are found in 1860 living in Independence County,Arkansas. The head of the household is James Cartwright age 40, but there is also Sarah Cartwright age 62. According to the birthplaces of the children they were residing in Illinois in 1840 and moved to Arkansas about 1851.[5]

At least of two of the men in Sarah's household in 1860 served in the same company and regiment of the Confederate Army, Co B, 7th Regiment Arkansas Infantry, which was raised in Independence County, Arkansas.
