Private Charles (Gilkey) Patterson served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 1862 Mustered out: 1862 Side: USA Regiment(s): Co B, 54th Indiana Infantry
Charles Scott Gilkey was named for his uncle C.S. Gilkey a successful businessman who owned (among other enterprises) a hotel in Greenup County, Kentucky.
His mother died between 1851 and 1854 and Charles was apparently sent to live with relatives and foster families. At some point he was either adopted or simply began to use the surname Patterson. This is shown in his military records for the Civil War where he is listed as "Charles S. Patterson or Guilkey or Guylkey". [2][3] He served as a Private in Company B, 54th Indiana Infantry.[4]
Charles married first Florence Rigdon 24 June 1871 at Ft. Wayne, Allen County, Indiana. [5]
Charles S. Patterson married second Amelia ("Millie") Williams 29 March 1874 Kosciusko, County, Indiana [6]
In 1880 he resided Wayne, Kosciusko, Indiana. He was a farmer, age 33, born Kentucky and his father was born Kentucky and his mother Virginia. His wife, Amelia, age 20, was born in Tennessee. [7]
By 1900 he resided in Fremont County, Wyoming. [8]
He died 1902 in Thermopolis, Hot Springs, Wyoming.
