Doctor Thomas Washington Gill of Cahaba, Alabama

Father: "James Gill was one of five brother who fought in the Revolutionary War under Gen. Sampler. He was wounded in the battle of Hanging Rock. He was the son of John Gill. When wounded, he was a captain in command of the company. Wife name not known.

Maiden name of subject's mother: Mary Louisa, the daughter of Judge William Gaston who lived at Chester District, South Carolina.

The father of Judge William Gaston was John Gaston who migrated to the U.States and settled in Pennsylvania in 1830 where he married Esther Waugh of that state a few years later. He then moved to South Carolina where he established his homestead known as "Cedar Shoales" then Catawba river. It is still known as ...

"Dr Thomas W Gill the subject of this sketch - was modest and retiring(?) in disposition but was strong and inflexible in his opinions, a staunch Whigh ___ opposed to secession but loyal to the South when she did secede and contributed largely to the Confederate cause. He lived in affluence, surrounded by mem? ___ and large plantation and was known for his hospitality and generosity. His home was a beautiful place surrounded by ____ ___ - located seven miles west of Cahaba on the Cahaba & Marines wood?> At the time of his death, he was one of the ----- men in Dallas County and left a large and handsome estate to be divided between his five children.^[1]

"A true and perfect inventory of the goods and chattels of Capt. James Gill Deceased made by those whose names are hereunto subscribed the ? day of November 1809.

Then follows four handwritten pages of 'goods and chattels' - everything from shovels to livestock and slaves, for a total worth of $7,240. Followed by 4 pages recording the sale of the 'goods and chattels'. Mary Gill, Thomas Gill, Ina Gill, Capt James Martin, and Hugh Wells were buyers. The sales included plantation slaves:

Place: Bullock Creek Prebsy. Church Cemetery, York Co., S.C.

Inscription. This marker commemorates the men who participated in the American Revolution, and are interred in the Bullock’s Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. These men, believing in the noble cause of liberty, gallantly fought for their home and country.

South Carolina as burial place is probably correct because the three children were born in South Carolina. Wife's birth and death place unknown.

Will is probably correct as wife, Mary, and sons, Thomas W and John, are named, plus a Kelsy (mother's maiden name) is listed, and Thomas Taylor, daughter Elizabeth's spouse.
