Buys house and property from Charles Rose in January 1767 near present day Clifford, Amherst Co., VA known as Athlone Plantation. Adds the west wing in 1780 according to records in the Amherst County Historical Museum. Sells house back to Charles Rose in 1785.
Too old to fight in the Revolution, he acted in the capacity of "Patriot" and is listed in the Amherst Co. Order Book, 1773-1782, p 482.
In the Virginia Gazette of June 6, 1778 the following notice appeared; "Galaspie,George, of Amherst Co., adv. that from late behavior of his wife, Mary Galaspie, he has reason to doubt her attachment to his interests and will not be answerable for any of her debts."
Listed on the Amherst Co. Personal Property Tax 1787 - List "B" as George "Gillispee". Having 1 male son (George Jr.) between 16 & 21 living with him, 4 slaves over 16, 3 slaves under 16, 8 horses and 9 cows.
Listed on the 1800 Amherst Co. Tax list as George "Gillespie". Owning 5 slaves over 16, 1 slave under 16 and 5 horses.
On November 21, 1803, George's widow (#2 Molly Faris) deeded her interest in his estate to his children for 300 pounds.
George's heirs sold 404 acres of land in Amherst Co., VA on the south side of and adjoining the Piney River to David S. Garland. Except for a quarter acre where "our father George is buried". Piney river divides Amherst from Nelson Co. A Wright decendant of George (through Dicey) has a copy of the deed including the location of the burial site. Near the Wright home, there are no markers and the grave site has been plowed over.
