Biography

From: "Historical Statement, 1754-1954," Grand Pre Presbyterian-Covenanter Church, 1804-1954, 150th Anniversary Service programme, 29 Aug 1954. "... He was succeeded in 1791 by Rev. George Gillmore who also laboured in this charge for 20 years. At this time Presbyterianism seemed to be at a low ebb but still, in 1804, a start was made on the building of this Church. It was not completed, however, until 1811 and in that year Mr. Gillmore died."

"Mr. Gillmore had been in Nova Scotia since 1784. He lived in Ardoise where he received a free grant of land for his services, and one winter his family subsisted on potatoes and milk. On one occasion, he walked to Halifax and tried in vain to mortgage his farm for a barrel of flour, and so in the midst of poverty and many difficulties he continued 'Faithful unto death.' His body was buried in the cemetery close by the Church and on the headstone is inscribed in Latin his obituary which he wrote himself and the following is the English translation:

Here in this grave lies the body of George Gillmore, who on the 20th day of September in the 88th year of his age died in the year of our Lord 1811. He received ordination at the hands of the Presbytery. For many years he preached the gospel, unholy contact with the irreligious crowd did not turn him from the right path. Through varied experiences, through so many different conditions of things full of faith and holding fast to his belief, lamented by many good people he died, 'Remember that thou must die.'

NOTE

@N2105@ NOTE The translation [from Latin] of the inscription on his tombstone has been given by the late Dr. A. W. Eaton as follows:
Here interred lies the body of George Gillmore,
Who died the 30th of September, 1811,
In the 90th year of his age,
From the hands of the Presbytery
he received sacred ordination
and many years he preached the Gospel
in the right manner and way.
He did not turn aside through
Contact with the sacrilegious crowd,
Through varied misfortunes and many hazards
And full of faith and holding fast his purpose,
Lamented by many good people, he died.
Remember to die.
