Charles was born in 1793. He was the son of Bradbury Gilman and Hannah Gilman.
He studied law and he was admitted to the bar, and was employed in the Courts of New Hampshire. In 1833 Charles Gilman moved to Baltimore, where he continued to practice law.
In the spring of 1849 he traveled, on a business trip, to California, accompanied by his son, Charles H. Gilman.
He was a Mason and sixteenth Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of A. F. & A. M of Maryland (1842-1848) and General Grand High Priest, 1856-1859.
He married 1st Martha Hilliard (1801–).
He married 2nd Ruth Phelps Morse (1797–1835), daughter of Anthony Morse (1753-1803) and Huldah Taylor (1756-1826). They had the following children:
Charles Hamilton Gilman (1831–1855).
Ellen Gilman (1833–1913), who married William Henry Porter (1836–1873).
Ruth Morse Gilman (1835–1836).
He married 3rd Catherine Blanchard (1810–1884).
He passed away in 1861.
