Biography

Joseph Nicolas was born in Acadie between 1754 and 1759. He was the son of Jean-Baptiste Girouard and Madeleine LeBlanc. [1]

Some time between 1756 and 1757, the Girouard family who was residing in Memramcook, fled to Camp d'Espérance, established at the end of the summer of 1756 to protect from famine and from the roundups of the British soldiers the approximately 1250 Acadians who went there. [2]

In 1761, the family was residing in Nepisiguit where they had sought refuge for their 2 sons and 2 daughters. [3] Another census was taken in November that year. There were 5 people recorded in Nepisiguit.[4]

Joseph Nicolas was found with his parents and siblings in Halifax, prisoners held at Fort Beausejour (renamed Fort Cumberland) on August 24, 1763.[5]

After 1763, and having managed to escape deportation, they settled in Tracadie, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. [6]

He married Angélique Petitpas, daughter of Joseph Petitpas and Louise Fougère, around 1780. [1]
