Biography

Nathan[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] was born on 13 March 1865 in Virginia,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] the son of John Gish and Elizabeth Kinzie.

Marriage?

According to Nathan's entry in Findagrave (see below), at an unknown date and place, he married Teressa Standfly. However, no wife ever appears in any of the censuses, which ordinarily report him as "single," and I think that in the absence of contrary evidence, we are safe in the belief that he never married, or if he did that the marriage was short-lived. Death and burial

On April 14, 1942, a month after his seventy-seventh birthday, Nathan died of unknown causes in Modesto, Stanislaus County, California.[22] He was buried in Wood Colony Cemetery, Modesto.

Nathan Gish appears in the 1870 United States Federal Census as a 4-year-old child living with his parents (his father has $4909 in real and $500 in personal property and five siblings, two brothers and three sisters. His father has not been denied voting, which suggests he was loyal to the Union in the Civil War.

Places of residence

Nathan’s place of residence in the late nineteenth century is unclear. He was born in Botetourt County and appears there in the 1870 census. By 1880 the family had moved to Franklin County, Virginia. In the 1920 U.S. census he said he had arrived in Modesto, Stanislaus County, California, in 1883, which is where we find from 1910 on. But there is evidence that he was in Centropolis, Franklin County, Kansas, on 1 March 1885.KS[30] The census for 1890 was destroyed by fire. In 1892, he was in Huron, Fresno County, California.[31] In 1900 he was living in Downey Township, Los Angeles County, California.[32] From 1910 forward, he was, as we have said in Modesto, California, and appears in the 1910 through 1940 censuses.
