Bio: With the old writing John's middle initial is either L or S. Since the Germans named children after their ancestors I believe this is a clue to Mathias wife's maiden name. The initial shows up in the militia list. John actually died on a Lancaster Co, Militia engagement. Three members died that day. On the muster roll call for Captain Thomas Robinson's Company of Lancaster Co Militia, John Gish was reported as dead 21 Apr 1783. Captain Thomas Robinson's company was the eighth company of the fourth Battalion, commanded by Colonel Jacob Cook. One of his descendants states he is buried on the Stern Farm. The Stern farm was his before he died. John married Elizabeth Kapp about 1763 Lancaster Co, Pa. She is the Daughter of John (Johannes) Kapp and Katherine Etter. Their children are John, Christian, Mathias, Jacob I, Abraham, Anna Marie, Catherine. John was a blacksmith. His wife's stone reads Gisch which is the old way to spell Gish/Kish. John was a blacksmith and farmer like his father. His wife Elizabeth moved to Perry and Juniata's counties with some of her children and she is buried there in Barner's Church Cemetery. Her stone is online. One entry in the Pennsylvania Archives Militia section has his name as John L but it might have been misread and is an S. It is the only time one of the children have a middle initial listed as a clue to their mothers last name. Jan 11 1791 Book 1788-1791 page 318-319 (wife of Mathias, Catherine Gish has died). "The court appoints John Stern guardian of the estates of Anna Maria Gish, Abraham Gish and Jacob Gish minor children of John Gish late of Mountjoy township Yoeman(?Leaman) deceased during their minority respectfully (there being several over the age of fourteen years) agreeable to their written application for that purpose. The "court appoints John Stern of Mountjoy township guardian over the estates of Mathias Gish and Catherine Gish minor children of John Gish, Yoeman deceased during their minority, they being several years under the age of minority. I believe Catrina/Catherine Gisch (mother of John) is the daughter of either John Stern or John Leaman. John Stern is guardian to John's children in 1791 and then John Leaman becomes guardian. John and Elizabeth have several land records 9 Dec 1775 Deed book S, Vol 1, page 379 John and Elizabeth to John Leaman16 Apr 1776 Deed book HH, Vol 2, pg 6061795 John Stern to Jacob Stern Land that belonged to John Gish. Whereby, he the said John Gish became seised in Fee of and in the Lands and Premisses aforesaid, agreeable to the said Order of the Orphans Court and charged only with the said sum of Two Hundred Ninety One Pounds, Two Shillings and Five Pence (being one third part of the said sum of Eight Hundred Seventy Three Pounds, Seven Shillings and Four Pence, residue of the Valuation or Appraisement Money duly paid), and the Interest thereof which said Interest amounting to Seventeen Pounds and Four Pence, is to be paid to the said Elizabeth Gish, the Widow Relict of the said John Gish, deceased, yearly and every year during the term of her natural life and in the Lieu of Satisfaction ofher Dower or Thirds at Common Law of and in premisses. And after her death the said principal sum of Two Hundre Ninety One Pounds, Two Shillings, and Five Pence, is to be paid by the said John Gish, his heirs or assigns holding the Premises and distribute to and amongst the children of the said John Gish, deceased, and the Representatives of such of them as shall be then dead, allowing to the said John Gish, or his Representative an equal share with the other children of the said deceased; he having agreed to take but a single and equal share thereof agreeable to the true intent and meaning of the said Order of Orphans Court, and whereas the said John Gish, in and by his certain Indenture bearing date, the said First Day of October in the Year of Our Lord, One Thousand Seven Hundred Ninety One, for the consideration therein mentioned did grant, bargain, and sell unto John Stern (Party hereto), his heirs and assigns, all those the said Two Tracts or Parcels of Land whereof the said John Gish the father, died seised in Fee, and which by the said Court Order of the Orphans Court were confirmed unto the said John Gish, as aforesaid, by Meters and Bounds in the same Indenture specified and described. One of them containing One Hundred Seventy Five Acres and Three Quarters of an Acre, and Allowances aforesaid (being the residence of the first above mentioned Tract of Two Hundred Seventy Six Acres and a Half of an Acre and Allowances appraised), and the other of them containing Fifteen Acres and Sixteen Perches and Allowances, as aforesaid with their Appurtances, to hold to himself, thesaid John Stern, his heirs and assigns, forever, subject and charged with the said sum of Two Hundred Ninety One Pounds, Two Shillings, and Five Pence (being one third part of the said sum on Eight Hundred Seventy Three Pounds, Seven Shillings, and Four Pence, residue of the Valuation of the Lands and Premises aforesaid, and the Interest thereof, which said Interest amounting to Seventeen Pounds, Nine Shillings, and Four Pence yearly, is to be paid to the said Elizabeth Gish, the Widow and Relict of the said John Gish, deceased, yearly and every year during the term of her natural life, for and in Lieu and Satisfaction of her Dower Thirds at Common Law of and in the premises, and after the death of the said Elizabeth, the said sum of Two Hundred Ninety One Pounds, Two Shillings, and Five Pence, is to be paid by the said John Stern, his heirs or assigns holding the premises and distribution to and amongst the children of the said John Gish, deceased, and the Representatives of such of them as shall be then dead, allowing to the said John Gish or his Representatives, an equal share with the other children of the said deceased; he having agreed to take but a single and equal share thereof as aforesaid as in and by the said recited Indenture reference thereto being had may more fully and at large appear. Now this IndentureWitnesseth that the said John Stern and Barbara (his wife) in consideration of the sum of Four Hundred Fifteen Pounds, Fifteen Shillings, and Seven Pence current money of Pennsylvania, in specie of Gold and Silver Coin, to them or one of them in hand well and truly paidby the said Jacob Stern at and before the sealing and delivery hereof (the receipts and payment whereof they and each of them do hereby acknowledge and thereof do acquit, release, and dischard the said Jacob Stern, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, by their presents), have and each of them both granted, bargained and sold, etc."According to Lehigh County History there was one Gish buried on the Stern farm. Since it was John's farm and he died in the militia. I'm thinking he was the one buried there. The early information of Gish's in this account have the rest of the Gish information all wrong with the newer information right. It says the farm was on the road between Elizabethtown and Mainheim, near Reesers(Rissers) Meeting House. Most of the first two generations and some of the third generation of Gish's used the spelling Gisch. Also they all have family farm cemeteries and are buried on the farms they lived on.
