Biography

Name of Ancestor: Christina Glanart [Glanert]

Date and location of Christina’s Birth: in the Duchy of Luebeck, Germany The marriage entry in the Ahrensboeck Lutheran parish register listed the journeyman carpenter Johann Heinrich Mathias Stuhr, batchelor in Barghorst, and Christina Maria Emma Glanert, single girl in Barghorst, with the marriage date of 15 Oct 1880, but no other information. Barghorst is another village in Ahrensboek parish.

Working from the known to the unknown, the best approach is to look for Christina Glanerts confirmation record in Ahrensboeck next, going backwards from 1880. This document would likely include at least her age at the time of confirmation, but may also list her birthday, -place, and parents names. With her age and/or birth date and place it should be easy to locate Christinas baptismal record, which will contain her parents names. Hopefully she was born in Ahrensboeck parish as well.

Date and location of Christina’s Death: 26 September 1931; in Germany(?)

Name of Ancestor’s Spouse: Johann Stuhr

Marriage Date and Location: The marriage entry in the Ahrensboeck Lutheran parish register listed the journeyman carpenter Johann Heinrich Mathias Stuhr, batchelor in Barghorst, and Christina Maria Emma Glanert, single girl in Barghorst, with the marriage date of 15 Oct 1880.

Names of Ancestor’s Children:

Wilhelmina Stuhr b. 21 June 1880 m. Ernst Schroeder and had 5 children;
Gottlieb Stuhr b. 28 June 1882 had 1 “Sohn”[son];
Frida Ida Maria Stuhr b. 2 May 1884 m. Stockelsdorf by Lubeck, Germany in the Lutheran Church, (my grandmother) d. 30 November 1970 in Clovis, Fresno Co., California, U.S.A.;
Gustav Stuhr b. 18 March 1886 married and had 3 girls;
Bertha Stuhr b. 28 April 1888 m. Otto Schutz and had 3 children;
Adolf Stuhr b. 18 April 1890 did not marry;
Rosa Stuhr b. 8 October 1892 m. Unknown Wiechmann and had 1 son;
Hulda Stuhr b. 6 December 1897 m. Unknown Lange and had 1 girl

Johann Stuhr and his wife, Christina Glanart, both remained in their home in Germany after their daughter, Frida Stuhr Hartmann, left for America. As far as the American family knows, all of their children except Frida remained in Germany.

Johann Stuhr and Christina Glanart gave each of their sons a trade (a means of earning a livelihood); this was a point of pride for them.

Ancestor’s Occupation: Unknown. Christina’s daughter, Frida, was a midwife who trained at Keil, Germany; she had completed the sixth grade in Germany which is equivalent to an eighth grade education in the U.S.

Records already Searched and Findings: A document in German made out in 1911 for my mother (Paula Johanna Erna Hartmann) that lists her mother, Frida, as from “Vorwerk Ahrensboeck”; there is such a place in Germany near the Danish border.

My mother’s typed “Family Trees Saunders - Hartmann” supplied most of this information.

My grandmother, Frida Stuhr Hartmann, wrote a letter with information about her family and about her husband’s family; this letter is undated. This information generally matches my mother’s typed information; Frida used the word “Sohn” in place of the English “son”.

My mother told me that Christina was an orphan who had not known her parents; she had one brother. Johann was also an orphan. One more of my mother’s grandparents was also an orphan. At least one of the orphans had been in a Lutheran orphanage; this does not indicate their religion since all orphanages and other social services were run by the Lutherans then.

MyAncestorsFound has a project to find Christina's parents. I am still hoping to receive results.

"c) The Lutheran records of Stockelsdorf, a parish in the former Duchy of Luebeck, include the marriage of your grandmother Frieda Stuhr to Friedrich Paul Hartmann on 25 Feb 1905 in the local parish church. Friedrich Paul Hartmann, a laborer in Ravensbusch [a village in this parish], son of the iron turner Carl Richard Hartmann there, and of Dorothea Johanne Maria Kauffmann, born on 26 May, baptized 17 July 1881, confirmed 22 March 1896 in Stockelsdorf, married Frieda Ida Maria Stuhr in Stockelsdorf, legitimate daughter of the carpenter Johann Heinrich Matthias Stuhr there, and Emma Christine Dorothea Glanert, born on 2 May, baptized on 2 June 1884, confirmed on 27 March 1898 in Stockelsdorf. The scripture given to the couple as a guide was John 13 verse 34.

d) Since Frieda's baptism was not found in Stockelsdorf, her family had apparently moved there from another parish prior to her confirmation in 1898. Most likely the previous town of residence was the Lutheran parish of Ahrensboeck, also part of the Duchy of Luebeck. This parish includes a number of smaller villages, including the Vorwerk [=suburb] of Ahrensboeck mentioned in the document you have for your mother. The Ahrensboek records are mostly available through the mid-1940s and also include a grave register and other historical records not usually available with filmed parish registers. Unfortunately the marriage records of the 1880s provide very little information concerning the families of the future couple. This is primarily due to the fact that the civil registry asked many questions about the bride and groom and their families, so it didnt seem necessary for the church to duplicate this effort.

e) The marriage entry in the Ahrensboeck Lutheran parish register listed the journeyman carpenter Johann Heinrich Mathias Stuhr, batchelor in Barghorst, and Christina Maria Emma Glanert, single girl in Barghorst, with the marriage date of 15 Oct 1880, but no other information. Barghorst is another village in Ahrensboek parish."
