Biography

Elizabeth Goad was born July 12, 1726, in North Farnham Parish Richmond county, Virginia. [1] Elizabeth married John Cox, Sr. born circa 1725, who took the Oath of Allegiance to the Patriot cause, in 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, in Montgomery county, Virginia. [2]

John Cox, aka Cock(e) is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A207624. DAR records indicate that John died after June 1, 1787, in Montgomery county, Virginia. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of their son, John Cox, Jr. [3]

Elizabeth's sister, Joannah Goad, married in 1744, in Culpeper county, Virginia, to Valentine "Val" Sevier. The fact that they are sisters is verified by testimony, In August 1747, John Edwards was brought to court to answer the whereabouts of Johnnis Cox:

  • Captain Thomas Cresap vs. Johannis Cox. -- Debt. Writ 23d August, 1747: "He lives on Smith's Creek, near Lohe's (?) plantation. Ask Val. Sevier, he is his brother-in-law." [4]

According to the book, Carroll 1765-1815, the Settlements: A History of the First Fifty Years of Carroll County, Virginia, published in 1985:

  • "John Cock purchased 200 acres of land on Frying Pan Creek in Pittsylvania County in 1771, which was the year before he moved to Burks Fork in what is now Carroll Co. He did not sell his Pittsylvania farm until 1776." A note by a Cock researcher on Ancestry states that John Cock sold 200 acres on Frying Pan Creek to Patrick Morison on August 4, 1776, according to Pittsylvania Co. Deed Book 4, page 266. Witnesses were Thomas Goad and John Goad, which helps to confirm that John Cock's wife was indeed a Goad.
