Note

The Oath of Allegiance was administered to "John Gussett" who served in the Revolutionary War, August 30, 1777, in Henry Co VA. Judith Parks America Hill, A History of Henry County, Virginia, 1925, page 306. Also cited in The Family of Gossett by Evangeline Gossett Newcomer. Also signing were Alexander Cavin, several Dillons, Wm. and Thomas Hollinsworth, James Meredith Jr and Sr, Bradley, William and Samuel Meredith, Henry and other Mays men.

Land records in Henry and later Patrick Co VA, from 1770s through 1817.
Two Gossett books give different origins of this family. Chronicles of the Gossett Family by Grace M Jerkins is more probably correct, and Evangeline Gossett Newcomer's The Gossett Family full of myths.
It seems that Gossett researchers, possibly at the beginning of this century, saturated the family with stories of French origin, so that it is impossible now to get any accurate family traditions. See Josie Gossett, "The Gossett Family" in the Register of the KY Historical Society, pp 139-152.
Mrs Jerkins did not trace the family back into the regions of myth, but stayed with proven families, probably as close as first or second cousins of our branch.
Children except Joseph and Cavin were married in Patrick Co VA. Cavin was married in Henry Co VA on the same day as Elizabeth (Gossett) Oakley. Others married in Washington Co OH.
Thomas G Gossett wrote that the most probable indicator fo this John's origin is the location of Henry Mayze, since John and Elizabeth Mayze moved to the Henry Co VA region when their children were already in their teens. Abraham, likely the eldest, was married in 1798. Did they move to Henry Co from the North (Frederick Co? Augusta Co?) or from the East (Prince George Co?)?
Lee Adams at the Bassett Public Library, Bassett VA, wrote in 1976 that this John Gossett and Thomas Hollandsworth both married daughters of Henry Mayze and that the origin of men were unclear. John Goseett obtained a land grant 29 Jun 1784, adjoining Thomas Hollandsworth's land on Blackberry Creek (Grant Bk K, p 192, in Archives VA State Library, Richmond).
Thomas G Gossett wrote in 1988 that the reconstructed tax list of 1787 (New Castle DE or Henry Co VA?) included John Gossett, Hollandsworth (of Holingsworth), Solomon, Bassett, John Cavin, Gooding, Broom and others. He believed that Hollandsworth and Cavin were brothers-in-law of John Gossett.

Notes 2

Mrs Ray E Dew wrote the US Army Pension Office in 1914, inquiring about this man, as well as Matthias, Ralph or James Gossett.
This man is John of Blackberry Creek, Henry Co VA.
"Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files": John Gosset, S42750, VA Line, appl 14 May 1818 Washington Co Ohio. Aged 65, in 1820 had stated his family consisted of himself & 1 child Abi aged 12 years. Although according to this record he would have been born in 1755, other records say he was born in 1753. He died in Washington Co Ohio around 1820-21. The Pension List of 1820 U.S. War Department shows John Gossett enlisting in Oct of 1776 in Virginia for 6 years. He was in Patrick Co VA as late as 1813 when his daughter was married and possibly as late as 1817; a different John was in Washington Co OH in the 1810 census. John Gossett Jr was also there.
The Virginia war records furnish proof that John Gossett, b. 1753, served in the 7th and 9th regiments of the Virginia Continental Line. He was a fife-major and received bounty land and a pension. At the time of his death he was living in Washington Co OH. He died 1820-1821.
References for these statements are to be found in the several publications giving Virginia soldiers: War Records of Virginia (Rev.) by G M Brumbaugh and Regiments of the Revolution by Gwathmey; also, National Archives, Washington, DC. The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the American Revolution who lived in the State of Ohio, vol. II, published by the State Society Daughters of the American Revolution of Ohio 1788-1938, contains the following record: Gossett, John, Washington Co OH, b. 1753. Pvt. Va. Contl. Enl. Oct. 1776 Va. Served 6 yrs. Was born 1753; appld. for pens. Washington Co OH, May 14, 1818; again in 1820. Had one child [at the time] named Abi; stated property value at $18.00. (Ref. V3, p. 430). Text: I did not agreed with the identification of this John Gossett with the Revolutionary War veteran in Washington Co OH until DNA matches seem to prove me wrong. Our John was still in Patrick Co VA when his daughter and son were married in 1813 and in a land transaction in 1817.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
