Biography

Parents

According to Vivian, Thomas was the son of the son of ThomasGould d 1502 and his wife Eleanor (grand son of Robert Gould of Seaborough and Idonea Mycheldever[1] According to the Visitation of Devon, Thomas Gould had reached the age of 30 at his fathers death in May 1502 suggesting a birth year of about 1472. He married Edith, the daughter of Roger Appleton and together they had several children.

Margaret who married Richard Martyn of Athelhampton
Katheryn who married Henry Hoskyns
John, the heir (who was murdered whilst hawking)
Alice married John Bale
Anne married William Stretchleigh.

Thomas died on 13th September 1525, and was buried in Crewkerne Church, where there is a memorial brass to his memory. The inscription reads

  • (Praye for the soule of) Thomas Golde esquir which decessed the xiij day of September the yere of our lord m d xxv (oh whose soule jhu have mercy)

The words in brakets are deliberately defaced (though visible) suggesting someone did not approve of prayers for the dead. W Rogers in his article (Somerset and Dorset Notes and Queries) speculates that this may have been done on the orders of his daughter Anne who resided and was buried in Ermington . He cites

1) the wording of her will in a bequest for money to set up organs at the church in Crewkerne 'if they shall be sett up in honour of Almighty God'
2) the positioning of the communion table in the parish of Ermington where she resided ( table moved away from the East Wall to a more central position)

He suggests that both are indications of 'the trend of religious thought prevalent there at that era' [2] [3]

Note

The profile of Ephraim (Gould-1624) was unlinked since there is no evidence of a son called Ephraim who in turn had descendants . The son of Thomas, John Gould was murdered at the age of 30 ,his only son son also a John died young and the estate reverted to Thomas's four daughters as co-heirs.Coleman-5109 06:43, 30 January 2017 (EST) Can you add any information on Thomas Gould?
