Biography

Priscilla Gould was born about 1585. No birth or christening records are available for her, as the Bovingdon registers from before 1674 are lost. She is "identified in the notice of settlement of estate of her father, Richard Gould."[1][2]

No marriage record was found, but she is said to 'almost certainly' be the Priscilla that married John Putnam of Aston Abbots.[3] Her son, John Putnam Jr, was called 'cousin' (nephew) by Zaccheus Gould, her brother.[2] John and Priscilla Putnam were said to have gone from Aston Abbots to Salem, Massachusetts with their children Thomas, Nathaniel, John and Elizabeth.[3][4]

No death record was found for Priscilla. She was mentioned as late as the 21st of February 1648/9 in the Essex County court records.[5] The family lived in Salem, where Priscilla most likely died. Her husband died in Salem in 1662.[2][4] Priscilla was laid to rest with her husband, John, in the Wadsworth Cemetery, in Danvers.[6]

Family

John Putnam and Priscilla married about 1611, in England, had issue:
Children:
  1. Elizabeth Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, Bucks, 20 Feb. 1612; "Eliza Putnam" admitted to the church at Salem, 1643.[7][4]
  2. Lt. Thomas Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, Bucks, 7 Mar. 1614/5; of Lynn and Salem, Mass.[8][4]
  3. John Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, Bucks, 24 July, 1617; died in infancy; buried at Aston Abbotts, 5 November 1620.[8]
  4. Nathaniel Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, 11 Oct. 1619; of Salem, Mass; died Salem Village, 23 July 1700 age "about 79 or 80"(Danvers church records).[8][4]
  5. Sarah Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, 7 March 1622/3.[8]
  6. Phoebe Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, 28 July 1624;[8] and buried there 30 April 1630.
  7. Capt. John Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, Bucks, 27 May 1627; of Salem, Mass.[8][4]
Note: No mar rec found, but she is almost certainly the Priscilla who married John Putnam of Aston Abbots, Bucks, 14 miles from Bovingdon. Her son, John Putnam, Jr, is called "cousin" [nephew] by Zaccheus Gould, Priscilla's brother, on 20 Nov 1658 (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 2:126 [FHL #974.45/P2e]).[2]
Note: Torrey indicated marriage before 1605; this appears in error. He has the marriage with Zaccheus Gould for before 1620, Torrey's Supplement also has the marraige bef 1605 and cites REG 119:174.[9]
John Putnam married PRISCILLA GOULD Abt. January 1610/11 in Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, England, daughter of RICHARD GOULD and ELIZABETH
John was perhaps married in 1611 or 1612. The marriage records for this period are missing from the Wingrave register, and the register for Hemel Hempstead is lost.[10]

Research Notes

Our Generations Ancestors

Gould, Priscilla
Born Abt 1585 of Bovingdon,Herts,Eng
Died Aft 1640 Salem,Essex,MA
Family Putnam, John
Married Abt 1611
PUTNAM, JOHN, Salem 1640, is said to have come with wife Priscilla, children Thomas, born it is said, about 1618; Nathaniel, about 1621; John, about 1630; and Elizabeth from Aston Abbots, near Aylesbury, in Co. Bucks, though family tradition has the name of a place in Co. Warwick, where it is unknown, freeman 1647, says Farmer by mistake, though true it is he was that year received into the church as had been his wife in 1641, died 30 December 1662.[4]
It has been suggested that she was a daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, a reasonable assumption since Zaccheus Gould, who is known to have married Phebe Deacon, the eldest daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, refers to the emigrant's son, John Putnam the younger, as "my Cousin" - a term which at this period usually implied a nephew - when he made him his attorney on 30 Sept. 1658. The difficulty has been to determine in what way the term "Cousin" applied in this case.[3]
Note: Torrey indicated marriage before 1605; this appears in error. He has the marriage with Zaccheus Gould for before 1620, Torrey's Supplement also has the marriage bef 1605 and cites REG 119:174. 2 3 1 (Banfill)
The Putnam name comes from the parish Puttenham in Buckinghamshire.[11]
On November 25, 1658, Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield deputed "John Putnam of Salem, the younger, his cousin" to be his attorney. (Essex Court Records, IV, 100). In an account book of John Gould, grandson of Zaccheus, born 1662, died 1724, is found an entry by him as follows, "Grandfather Gould lived in Buckinghamshire, and Grandfather Deacon in Hertfordshire, in Hempstead town in Corner Hall." In this same book are references to John Putnam, a contemporary, alluded to as "cousin." Jeremy Gould, a brother of Zaccheus, had a wife (Priscilla Grover) and was living in Aston Abbotts in 1631, but was in Rhode Island in 1638. Another brother of Zaccheus was John Gould, who lived in Bovington, and had a daughter Priscilla (who married a Grover and had in turn a daughter named after her) and also a neice Priscilla Ware. Neither of those were of suitable age to have married with John Putnam. (see Water's Gleanings, pg 1019) Both John Putnam and Zaccheus Gould named daughters "Phoebe." Cousin was a term in use in the early part of the 17th century to indicate nephew, and as there appears no opportunity for a Putnam-Gould marriage either way, the only alternative is to adopt the suggestion that John Putnam and Zacchues Gould had married sisters. (see pg 46, Genealogical Bulletin for 1903)[8]

Daughter of Richard and Mary Gould. Wife of John Putnam. Mother of Thomas Putnam, Elizbaeth Putnam, John Putnam, Nathaniel Putnam, Sara Putnam, Phoebe Putnam and John Putnam.
According to the Putnam ancestry in England was published in New England Families, Third Series, Vol II, William Richard Cutter, ed. (Lewis: New York, 1915, pp. 1075-76). John Putnam (1579-1662), 12th Putnam (Puttenham) in this line, son of Nicholas and Margaret Putnam, was the immigrant Putnam ancestor.]]
John lived on his inherited estates at Ashton Abbots until he immigrated to Massachusetts by 1640/41, when he received a grant of land and where his wife Priscilla Deacon (?-?) [Priscilla Gould?]was enrolled in the church in Salem, MA. John was enrolled on April 4, 1647. John and Priscilla were the parents of Elizabeth, Thomas II (1614-1686), John, Nathaniel, Phoebe, and John.
Thomas Putnam II was the father of Joseph (1669-1724) and grandfather of the famous Israel Putnam (1717/18-1790) (See ALL OF THE ABOVE I, p. 297.) Three generations of Putnams (John, Thomas, Joseph) were among the few prominent, wealthy families in tiny Salem Villege, MA in the 17th century. [. . .]
Married: 1611 in England[12][13]
Note: Torrey indicated marriage before 1605; this appears in error. He has the marriage with Zaccheus Gould for before 1620, Torrey's Supplement also has the marriage bef 1605 and cites REG 119:174. 2 3 1[14][15][16]

"Gould Family Attached Documents. Note: This link has been set up as a link to a WikiTree free-space page, but apparently the page was never set up."

I have just been working on some Gould and Gold profiles and set up a WikiTree free-space page for "Gould"

I have not spent much time formatting it, rather just added links to useful information, but you are welcome to link to it/ edit it, if it suits your needs.

Priscilla is said to be the son of Richard Gould or Thomas Deacon, both at least partly based on the fact that Zaccheus Gould called her son 'Cousin.' It is said that the difficulty has been to determine in what way the term "Cousin" applied in this case.
