Wilkinson was born on the 23 January 1804 in Bourbon Co., Kentucky. He was the son of George Grant and Mary Berry. He married Christina Ward on 29th September 1825 in Corydon, Harrison, Indiana. Together they moved to Henry Co., Iowa in 1843-- settling in Tippecanoe Township at section 7. He held multiple offices within the township, as a Republican elected official.
In 1843, the 'Henry County Common School Association' was incorporated by law in Iowa legislature. Wilkinson was one of the main signers and board members, listed also were: John B. Crawford, George Carson, William Johnson, R.M. Clark, Linus Fairchild and Thomas Grant. Four of Wilkinson and Christina’s six sons served the Union during the Civil War. All four men were discharged alive, though three were captured by the enemy. Wilkinson’s farmland was donated to make the “Grant Family Cemetery” in Rome, Iowa. He passed away in 1882 in Henry Co., Iowa at the age of 78. Having had ten children and many, many descendants with his loving wife.
