Biography

Heber J. Grant was the Seventh President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The only son of Jedediah M. Grant, faithful Apostle and friend to the Prophet Joseph Smith. Heber was called to be an apostle at the age of twenty five and in late 1918 after the death of Joseph F. Smith he became president until he died in 1945. His term of almost twenty-seven years is second only to the tenure of Brigham Young.

Heber J. Grant was born November 22, 1856 [2][3] in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory. Grant was nine days old when his father Jedediah Grant died. His mother Rachel Ivins married Jedediah's brother George, but soon divorced him.

When Heber was a toddler, General Relief Society president, Eliza R. Snow prophesied in tongues and Zina D. H. Young interpreted "that he would become a great man in the church." Years later, when Heber C. Kimball was dining at the Grant home, he picked up Heber, set him on the table, and prophesized that he would become an apostle and "would live to be a greater man in the church than his father ^[1]

In his early years he was an accountant and cashier at Zions Savings Bank. He was also founder of the Utah Sugar Company, and main founder of the Salt Lake Theater Company. Heber was also vice-president of the Salt Lake Herald Company; director of Provo Woolen Mills, Deseret National Bank, Oregon Lumber Company, and ZCMI; and president of the State Bank of Utah, Home Fire Insurance Company, Salt Lake Theatre Company, Co-op Wagon and Machine Company, and the Heber J. Grant Insurance Company.

Grant married Lucy Stringham on November 1, 1877. She was a daughter of Briant Stringham, who came to the Salt Lake Valley with Brigham Young in 1847. Lucy and Grant would become the parents of six children. Lucy died in 1893.

In October 1882 Grant was accepted as member of the Council of Fifty—its youngest member—just days before the revelation naming him as one of the new members of the Quorum of the Twelve. He was twenty five years old.

Grant married Hulda Augusta Winters, on May 26, 1884 at the St. George LDS Temple [4] Augusta died in 1952. The following day he married Emily Harris Wells. Emily and Grant were the parents of four daughters and a son. Emily died in 1908. Heber J. Grant was the last LDS Church president to practice plural marriage. By the time he became church president only one of his wives, Augusta, was alive. During his tenure, Grant enforced the 1890 Manifesto outlawing plural marriage.

Heber J. Grant died on May 14, 1945, of cardiac failure at the age of eighty eight.[5] He is buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetary[6][7]

President Grant ushered the Church into an era of prosperity and popularity. Missionary work increased dramatically and Church membership grew from under 500,000 to more than 950,000. In 1922 he became the first Church president to deliver a gospel message by radio. One of Grant's greatest legacies as president is the church's welfare program, which he instituted in 1936.
