In Memory of Mrs. Ida Bass

On Sunday, December 18, at 2:30 in the afternoon, silently and sweetly, the gentle spirit of my friend and neighbor, Mrs. Ida Bass, ascended to realms eternal where all is peace and rest, and one of our community's most beloved women was gone from her earthly home. To a spirit like hers, with no fear of faltering, death came not as "the cure but as the coronation of a useful, well-spent life." It was my blessed privilege to call her my true friend, but it is with a feeling of incompetency that I undertake to pay my tribute to the character of such an unusual, unselfish, and noble woman, and the tribute she so richly deserves. Truly, it is hard to tender consolation in the face of bereavement such as this. In the passing of Mrs. Bass, she leaves one daughter, two grandchildren, several brothers, sisters, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was a loyal member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. The suddenness of her passing has brought much sadness to all. I shall ever miss her friendly and cheery smile, for to know her was to love her. Her passing is a loss that cannot be replaced. It can truly be said that she never spoke evil of anyone. We cannot say, and will not say, that she is dead; she is just away. With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand, she has wandered into the Unknown Land; to be promoted to a higher, holier life and the dreamless sleep that has fallen upon her is only a forgetfulness of life, its pains, its heartaches, its separation, and she has joined the rank of Christian soldiers to awaken in the presence of the Eternal. Having passed through the "Valley of the Shadow of Death," with a number of my loved ones, I can fully sympathize with the family in their sorrow and loneliness, and I commend each of them to Him who will not forsake us and who doeth all things well.
