Biography

Samuel was born on the 1st of October, 1655, the 4th child of Isaac Graves.[1]. Samuel married first, on the 31st of October, 1678 to Sarah Colton; Sarah died July 11, 1689. He married second on the 1st of Jan. 1690 to Deliverance _____. Samuel died the 8th of February, 1692/93 at Hatfield, Hampshire, MA.[2] Deliverance married second to Isaac Graves, Samuel's cousin. (It was his third marriage.)[3][4][5]

"Samuel s. of Isaac, Hatfield, d. Feb. 8, 1692. He m. (1) Oct. 1, 1678, Sarah Colton. She d. July 11, 1689; (2) Jan. 1, 1690 Deliverance _____. She married (2) Isaac, son of John Graves.

Not to be mistaken for his cousin, Samuel Graves, son of John, who married Sarah Unknown in, an estimated date of, 1687, at an unknown location.

In the probate of his estate, the earliest date found, is the 12th of April, 1693. His wife, Deliverance (Unknown) is listed on page 5 & 9 & mentioned as the widow on page 11. The page 9 reference is from 1710. The division of the estate on page 7, dated 1707, names eldest son Samuel, sons Joseph & Thomas & "the widow now wife to Sergt Graves".[6]

Children:

  1. Rebecca, b. 1681
  2. Samuel b. 1685
  3. Joseph
  4. Elisabeth, b. Oct. 8, 1689 [This must be a transcription error. 1st wife Sarah died in July, 1689 & Samuel remarried to Deliverance, Jan. 1690. There is no marriage for a Samuel Graves & Elizabeth. However, there is a Samuel Gunn & Elizabeth Wyatt who married about 1685. In fact, they had a daughter, Elizabeth Gunn, whose birth date matches this supposed Elizabeth Graves.]
  5. Thomas, b. Oct. 1, 1690

After the Indian Raid

On February 8 1678 a list of all the men who had taken the oath of allegiance in Hatfield was listed. Included were several young men from the two Graves families: Isaac's son Samuel Graves Sr. (called Sr. because he was older than John's son Samuel) and John's sons John, Isaac and Samuel Jr. Isaac and John, the fathers, had been killed by Indians only 5 months before this, along with several other townspeople, so this would have been a way to settle the major upheaval.

On May 29 1678, The division of the Hatfield commons, was recorded. This comes from the proprietors' records. First division, beginning upon the plain behind the mill. "The lots run West and by North and East and by South, abutting against a highway Westerly; part of them against the clay pits and stone pits ; part against the hill ; part against the pond ; part against the hill by the Great swamp." 1 Samuel Graves, 33 rods. (son of Isaac) 15 Widow Graves, 10 rods. (wife of Isaac) 33 Isaac Graves, 14 rods 6 feet. (son of John) 50 John Graves, 15 rods 10 feet. (son of John) 63 Samuel Graves, Jr., 9 rods 2 feet. (son of John)

Second division. "This division of lots runs West and by North, East and by South, abutting on an highway on the West side of the Mill River Swamp Westerly; part against a great bank by the Wet Swamp [Hopewell], part against the Farms, and part against the great River Easterly." 6 Widow Graves, 9 rods 11 feet 9 inches. 27 Samuel Graves, Jr., 7 rods 11 feet 7 inches. 38 Isaac Graves, 13 rods 6 feet 6 inches. 53 John Graves, 9 rods. 60 Samuel Graves, Sr., 8 rods 12 feet 2 inches.

Third division, "beginning at the northwest side of the highway that leadeth to Northampton at the sandy hill." "Ending with ye uppermost lot laid out in Mill River swamp." 1 Samuel Graves, Sr., 137 rods. 11 John Graves, 14 rods 8 feet. 20 Widow Graves, 10 rods 1 foot. 40 Samuel Graves, Jr., 8 rods 5 feet. 47 Isaac Graves, 13 rods, 5 feet.

The nine last lots are in Whately. This division extended as far west as the town boundaries, six miles from the Connecticut. Fourth division, wholly in Whately. "This Division runs East and West, bounded on an Highway ten rods wide, laid out next the Mill River Swam]), East ; and on the end of the six Mile from the s^rcat River, West. This Division runs ninety one- rods beyond the Roaring I .rook, where was set up a long square stone, and a liass tree marked with six Splashes." 2 Widow Graves 9 rods 15 feet 3 inches. 47 Samuel Graves Sr. 8 rods 15 feet 10 inches. 50 Isaac Graves, 13 rods 11 feet 8 inches. 55 Samuel Graves Jr., 7 rods 15 feet. 58 John Graves, 9 rods 3 feet 5 inches.

Graves-1385 and Graves-1031 do not represent the same person because: Only the name is the same!
