Military Service and Death

Private in the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry regiment, Company F. Enlisted on 4 April 1863 from Poughkeepsie, New York. He was about 22 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted. He was captured on 18 July 1863 during the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. He survived the prisoner of war camps until at least 13 June 1864 which is the last record we have of him alive. Lacking further information, we have to assume he died while a prisoner of war.
