Notes

Note N12Known to Howard Green's family as "Aunt Lizzie" The following was dictated by Elizabeth to her daughter Gladys Jean Smith in July, 1981: I was born on August 10, 1872 at Hannon on the Hamilton, Ontario, Canada mountain to Jane Green (née Davidson) and John Albert Green. My father was the grandson of William Bridge Green and Charlotte Green who emigrated from London, England with their son and his bride, William and Lucy Green about 1826. William Bridge Green had owned and operated a draper's establishment (textiles, dry goods, etc.) near Bow Bells. Records in the church of St. Mary le beau (where beau bells ring) were lost when the church was destroyed by bombs during the war of 1939-45. Charlotte Green, his wife, came from Hemingham which is no longer marked on the map of England and must have been a hamlet. When the Greens reached the area where Hamilton is situated, the waters of the Bay came close to what became King and James Streets, which was marshland. They decided to settle on the Mountain and were given a crown grant which extended on concession wide and one concession long from Wellington St. to Wentworth St. east and west, and from the mountain brow to Fennel Ave., north and south. They built a solid brick cottage on Fennel Ave. at the south perimeter of their land. The family who lived across the road from them was named Burkholder. William Bridge Green was a friend of Sir Alan McNab, Governor of Upper Canada, who built Dundurn Castle, and lived there until his death. W. B. Green and his son captured one of the Fenians during a Fenian raid about 1830. The Greens has brought a Harmonium with them from England and W. B. Green took the instrument to church services of different denominations as requested. The Greens belonged to the Congregational Church. When the Congregational Church was built at the corner of Hughson and Rebecca Streets, timbers for the church were donated, but and hauled by William Green from his land to the building site. John Albert Green was the eldest church of William and Lucy Green. He had three brothers and four sisters. The family was gifted musically. One brother organized, conducted and composed music for two military bands in Hamilton. Another brother, Joseph Green, became consumptive and moved to Santa Barbara, California where he organized and conducted an orchestra. He taught violin. One sister, Jane, became Mrs. Routh and lived in Hamilton. Two sisters, Polly Piggot and Lottie Webster, lived with their families in Detroit. Another sister married the head of the firm which manufactured Dominion Organs in Bowmanville, Ontario and Kalamazoo, Michigan. 1
