Biography

Fred was born in 1861 in Geauga County, Ohio. After the Civil War his parents moved the family to Mirabile, Caldwell County, Missouri where they lived for a time.^[1] Around 1875 they moved again to Indian Territory (present-day Vinita, Craig County, Oklahoma) where they were tenant farmers for a man named Craig who held a head-right. In 1881 Fred's father died, and six months after that his mother died leaving him the oldest of 7 children, the youngest of whom was just a baby.

After the death of their parents in 1881-82 Fred and his sister Ella took care of the younger ones as best they could. They took the family to Kansas City where Fred worked first in a railroad roundhouse. He next ran a restaurant in the red light district. He was said to have been something of a gambler and a "wild 'un". He married here and had a couple of sons, but around 1888 he deserted his first wife and children, and took up with a young girl named Kate.

Fred was a "Sooner", one of the people involved in the Oklahoma land rush of 1889. ^[2] He homesteaded in Logan County, OK210 in what became the town of Crescent. His homestead application210 was for Lots 1 and 2 and the south half of the northeast quarter of Section 6 of Woodland Township (T17N, R3W)234.^[3]

According to his daughter he owned mineral rights all over Oklahoma and was a fairly wealthy man. While in his seventies, he had two more children with his mistress Cleo Draper. Shortly before his death in 1945 oil was discovered on his land, but he didn't live to enjoy it. He died of a heart attack March 2 1945.^[4]

He is buried in Crescent Cemetery next to his last wife Kate.^[5]

In 1910 he was still in Woodland.^[7]

By 1920 he was living in Crescent, Logan County, Oklahoma.^[8]

And also in 1930.^[9]

In 1940 he was still in Crescent.^[10]
