Biography

Hannah "Anna" Green was born at Canning, Nova Scotia in 1845.[1]

The 1901 and 1911 Canada census records show the birthdate for Hannah as 28 May 1845 / May 1845 respectively; the 1850 U.S. census for "Harriet" (Hannah) shows age 4, confirming she was born in 1845. She was the daughter of Charles Vincent Green and Margaret Ann Pineo.

Hannah married John William Orr at Portland, New Brunswick in 1872.[2]

Hannah Orr died in 1935. The death certificate has a few errors. Anna was born in 1845, not 1844. Father Charles Green was born in Nova Scotia, not Ireland. Mother's name was Margaret Ann Pineo, not Mary. Hannah is buried at Fernhill Cemetery, St. John, Saint John Co., New Brunswick.[3][4]

Heather - Start by looking at documents. I sourced Hannah's death certificate on her profile. It shows her birthplace as Canning, Nova Scotia. Another source is the late registration of birth for her son, William Devonport Orr.

The 1871 Census says "Anna", which I included as an additional name. You will note that her birth name on the profile is shown as Hannah Adelia Green. I personally cannot verify if her immediate family called her Anna in 1871, but all the other names of her family are written correctly, so I have no reason to doubt the census taker. Being a descendant, that's up to you to verify.

Green profiles were created by Douglas Coldwell but were empty — and locked. I chose to take them over and give the Greens their place in history.

You're welcome!

Sara - I don't believe Hannah was ever referred to as "Anna". The only source I see for this is the 1871 census which I expect was an auditory or transmission error. All other censuses list her as "Hannah" and that is the family remembrance as well. If you have another source for this I would certainly appreciate knowing about it.

Also I have no birth info other than "Nova Scotia". Do you have a source for Canning?

Thanks so much!

Heather
