Amos Benjamin Green was born on 17 Mar 1846 in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States, son of James Green (1805 - 1875) and Maria (Cobb) Green (1811 - 1897). He was the grandchild of Lois Freeman and Thomas Green, and Nancy Child and Nathan Cobb.

His siblings were:

Amos married Susie M Baker (~1847 - ) on 9 Jun 1867 in Sherborn, Massachusetts, United States.[1]

Amos married Mary Elizabeth Merrill (~1852 - >1880) on 2 Oct 1876 in Sherborn.

Amos died on 29 Nov 1881 in Sherborn aged 35. He is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Sherborn. [2]

After the war, he returned home to initially live with his parents and siblings and work at the shoe factory with his brothers John, Samuel and William. He continued to work there through at least June of 1880. Their Uncle Emery Cobb also worked as a shoemaker.

Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company D of the54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 23 years old, single and working as a seaman when he enlisted on 16 March 1863 in Sheeban [sic], Pennsylvania. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[4]

His brother, James Washington Green, was also in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts.

Note: There is an Amos Green in Company A who used the alias John Green.


Death

He passed away in 1881 and is buried at Pine Hill Cemetery in Sherborn, Massachusetts.
