John Gresham was born on 5 January 1692 in Middlesex, Virginia, the son of Thomas Gresham and Mary . [1]
Disputed Mother's Name
In the baptismal citation for John Gresham at Christ Church Middlesex, it says he is the son of Thomas Gresham and Mary ______. [1]
There are no sources that confirm the wife of Thomas Gresham was an Anderson. This error comes from a marriage in Cripple Gate, London of a Thomas Gresham and Elizabeth Anderson in 1684, but this has not been confirmed to be for Thomas d. 1721, son of Edward The Immigrant.
The baptismal citations for Christ Church Parish names Mary as the wife of Thomas for their children. No last name is ever given. There is one citation that says Thomas and wife Elizabeth. People have joined those two names together to get Mary Elizabeth.
If Thomas (d. 1721) had a first wife Mary who died and he married an Elizabeth Anderson, Mary's death record would have surely been recorded in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex and it is not. If the mother of his children had been Elizabeth Anderson of Cripple Gate, London then all the baptismal citations at Christ Church for his children would have read Thomas and Elizabeth. They do not. They clearly say Thomas and Mary.
Marriages and Family
John married Ann Carnen on 30 March 1714 in Christchurch, Middlesex, Virginia.[2] They had at least two sons:
Ann Gresham and John Deagle administered John Gresham's estate in 1752:
p. 435 – “On motion of Anne GRESHAM and her performing what the Laws require in the like Cases, Certificate is granted her for obtaining Letters of Administration of her dec’d Husband John GRESHAM’S Estate in due form, and thereupon the said Anne together with John DEAGLE her Security entered into Bond for the said Anne’s true and faithful Administration of the sd. decedent’s Estate and acknowledged the same to be their Act & Deed, which is admitted to record”.
p. 435 – “Ordered that William Morgan, Christopher Miller, John Berry and Thomas Hardin or any three of them (who being first sworn before a Justice of the Peace for this County) do appraise the Estate of John GRESHAM dec’d and that the Adm’rs return an Inventory thereof to the next Court”. (Note: No return has been found)
(NOTE: The Administration Bond dated 3 October 1752 is found in “Will Book D” on page 263-264. It is signed: Anne (her mark) Gresham, John Deagle.)
p. 437 – In Debt: “Our Sovereign Lord the King & Armistead Churchhill Gent., Plt’f against John DEAGLE, Defendant”. Jury verdict: “… the premises being attested, tried and sworn upon their oaths do say that the said Defendant is in no way guilty of the premises laid to his Charge in pleading hath alleged, Therefore it is Considered that the said Plaintiffs take nothing by their Bill but for their false Clamour be in mercy, and that the said Defendant go hence without day, and further by the Court here it is considered that the said Defendant recover against the said Plaintiffs his Costs by him about his defense in this behalf sustained, and the said Defendant have thereof Execution, etc.”.
