Susan was born about 1820 in Tennessee

to George Grimes and Eurydice Gardner. By 1831, she'd immigrated with her family to the colony Stephen F. Austin had begun in the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas.

Susan married three times. First in the Republic of Texas, she married Adam Kuykendall in San Felipe, Austin County in 1838.

They had one known son, Amos Kuykendall, in 1839. [1]
The last time she married was in July of 1845 to Wright Alford[5]
with whom she had Martha Alford the same year and Isaac Alford in 1850. At this time Susan still lived in Austin County, with her four children and husband Wright.
