Benjamin F., the eldest son, was born in Reading PA. He became a boilermaker and possibly received his early education in iron from his uncle William M. Griscom who in 1851 established the Reading Hardware Works, a foundry which manufactured all kinds of building hardware.
On February 25, 1856, he married Sarah Melinda Eachus Thompson. A few years later they moved to Ohio and settled in Fairfield Township, Butler County, about ten miles north of Cincinnati.
In 1869, after the Civil War, they moved to Chattanooga TN, where he joined the H. Clay Evans Iron Works as a master mechanic in steel and iron work. Later he moved to Cole City GA to manage the Georgia State Mines.
He was buried in Chattanooga's Citizens Cemetery, but the exact place of death is unclear.[1]
