Thomas was probably born about 1565 given his 1587 marriage in Horsham. A John Grumbridge and Alice Jup were married in Horsham 30 Jul 1570 which seem unlikely to be his parents as that would make Thomas just 17 at his marriage; but John Grumbridge may have been his uncle. A 1621 Horsham will of John Grumbridge must be studied for clues.[1] At least one tree shows him born 6 Dec 1561 in Speldhurst, Kent to John Grumbridge and Joanna Tyehurst but that should be treated as strictly speculative.
His name appears also as "Grumbridge" in various parish records so that should be considered a valid alternate last name.
Thomas married Anne Ive (also written as Ives and Ivey) on 10 Sep 1587 in Horsham, Sussex, England.[2] He may have had a brother John who, with wife Alice, was also having children baptized in the late 1590s and early 1600s in Horsham. There was also a John/Elizabeth combination having children in Horsham in the 1570s, whether this John was the same man and if or how he was related to this Thomas is not yet determined.
Anne Ive also appeared as "Agnes" in the baptisms of most of her children but was listed as Anne for the baptism of daughters Anne and Elizabeth, her first and seventh known children. Her first daughter Anne was baptized and married (to Thomas Champion of Horsham on 17 May 1612)[3] under the name Anne, but then appeared as "Agnes" in the baptism record of her son John Champion (5 Dec 1616 in Horsham[4]). So it seems that as was not uncommon, the names Anne and Agnes were used interchangeably and it seems likely that there was only one Thomas Grombridge having children baptized in Horsham in the 1590s and early 1600s.
Children of Thomas and Anne/Agnes Ive, all baptized in Horsham:[5] and [6]
Thomas likely died in Horsham about 29 Oct 1619 as a burial is recorded that day without further notation "son of" etc.[7]
The Thomas who was buried in Horsham 24 Oct 1668[8] is most likely the son of this Thomas as Thomas Jr. grew to adulthood and had children baptized in Horsham with a wife Elizabeth. On 24 May 1667 another Thomas Grumbridge was buried in Horsham (same source a few images prior), but that burial record says he was of "Kingston in Surrey" so it seems this was a different man, possibly related to this Thomas of Horsham.
