Biography

Catharina Apollonia Haan was born either 17 or 19 Feb 1702 in Contwig, Sudwestpfalz, Rheinland-Pfalz. Her surname is also given as Hanin. About 1725 she married Johannes Paul Büffel in Contwig, Zweibrucken, Rheinland-Pfalz. They had six children born in Contwig.[1][2] Two sons, Peter Anton and Georg Heinrich Paul, died as infants.[3]

With her husband and five surviving children, she emmigrated from Contwig, leaving Rotterdam on 12 Apr 1738, on the ship the Robert and Alice. The ship stopped in Dover, England (a requirement for ship sailing to the colonies), leaving for American on 4 Jul 1738, landing in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, on 11 Sep 1738.[4][5]

The family was living in Hanover, Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1738, when their son, Martin was born, and still there in 1747 when their last child was born.[6]

By 1755 the family was living in Rowan County, North Carolina.[7]

Catharine is named in her husband, Paul Büfle's will, probated in May 1777 in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina.[8] On August 7, 1777 she sold property at 3rd Jumping Run Creek in Rowan County, North Carolina that was left to her in her husband's will. The land was sold for 325 pounds which would have been a goodly sum at that time. She was also found on the tax rolls of Rowan County, North Caroline in 1778 but the property was not given in the subject. The amount of the tax was 106 pounds.[9]

Catharina died 9 Nov 1785 in Rowan County, North Carolina.[10]
