The war of the Spanish Succession ensued shortly after his death.
Charles was the son of Philip IV of Spain and his second wife, Maria-Anna of Austria. He succeeded his father at the age of four, and achieved his majority in 1676. Charles's mother acted as regent during his childhood. He became a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1665.
Philip's death reignited the war between France and Spain with Louis XIV using the excuse that he was entitled to sovereignty of the Low Countries through his wife, the daughter of Philip's first marriage with Isabella of Bourbon. Deciding to exercise his claim through force, Louis XIV invaded Flanders and Hainault and then in 1667, his troops commanded by the Marechal de Crequi, invaded Luxembourg where they caused a great deal of destruction. A provisional peace was signed at Aix-la-Chapelle on 2 May 1668. Much later, again on the same pretext that the bulk of the Luxembourgish territory actually belonged to France, Louis XIV occupied the Duchy of Luxembourg and the comte of Chimay (1678-1680).
