David was born in 1804 in Clark County, Kentucky. He was the son of David Hagan and Jane Bybee.
He married Mary Polly Witt in Crab Orchard, Kentucky on 30 September 1822 when he was 18 years old. They had 4 children together in Kentucky before moving to Clay County in western Missouri around 1830. They had two more children in Missouri, but Polly died shortly after the birth of their youngest son James in 1834.
He was married again on 9 May 1839 to Mahala Busely.[1] They had at least 10 children.
David was a farmer with farms in Van Buren (later Cass) County (1840 census), Dallas County (1850) and Webster County (1860) Missouri.
The pre-war years in western Missouri were turbulent. There was an upsurge in violence which accompanied the debate over whether the proposed state of Kansas (just across the border) would accede to the Union as a free state or a slave state. At least 50 people, and as many as 200, were murdered in the area before war broke out on 12 Apr 1861. One of those persons was David himself, who was beaten to death by bushwackers on 22 Feb 1861.[2]
