Note from FamilySearch.org record: According to family legend, Sarah's mother was an Indian (Osage or Cherokee) who came along the Trail of Tears. According to legend, a black scout gave her his surname in order to preserve her life. On 7/06/2000 Ruby Estes Sisk says that the father of Sarah did not like the Indians, so he would not allow Sarah to be included on the tribal records. Sarah may have been half Indian, perhaps Cherokee.

Viola (Reeve) Witt had a family story of Native American heritage on her mother's side which was passed on to her children. No names were carried forward, but Sarah was in Viola's direct maternal line. No records have surfaced to substantiate the above stories. In fact, the 1860 census for Sarah C. Haggard shows her as being 4 months old and with her family (indexed as Martin & Elizabeth Haggert) in Tennessee. This seems to contradict the above story from Ruby Estes Sisk. It's possible the story is accurate, but for a different ancestor.
