UEL Status:Proven

After immigrating to America from the Palatine, Joseph and family settled in the Livingston Manor area of New York, living there from 1767 until 1770 when he moved the family north and leased 200 acres in the Mohawk valley from Sir William Johnson. [1]

During the Revolutionary War his three oldest sons fought for the British, with one son, George losing his life at Oriskany. At the close of the War he moved to the Montreal area then to Dundas County, Upper Canada, which is now in Eastern Ontario.[2][3] [4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

George Hain is a different family. I share a direct father line with Joseph Hanes and the DNA on file for George Hain with the palatine protect is not a y-line match.

I have removed this man from the family of George Hain as new evidence has come forward indicating that this Loyalist was not part of that family but immigrated on his own from the Palatine.

joseph Jacob Hanes, my 6th g grandfather, was born in Germany as is proven in his submission for gov't relief as a United Empire Loyalist. He emigrated from Germany on the boat 'Two Brothers', landed in Philadelphia, 14 Sep 1749. His travels are well documented. The person you are documenting, son of George Hain/Veronica Koch, is a totally different person. You would be well advised to delete this page ASAP because it's a total fiction stemming from your own over-active imagination and not a serious consideration of established facts.

I don't know if it is fair to blame any problems in the tree on over active imagination. These early families can be difficult to untangle when different families have children with the same names and there is a dearth of good records. The situation is made even more difficult by the variety of spellings that we find for the last name.

As you may or may not be aware, there were two different men named Joseph Haines who were both Loyalists and settled in Upper Canada after the war. One settled in Dundas County in what would become eastern Ontario and the other settled in the Niagara region. Both had families and both are listed in the UEL registry.

When the project sorted out the family of George and Veronica Hain, we were left with a lot of questions about this Joseph, but little data, so it was set aside for further research.

I looked for Joseph on the Two Brothers in 1749 and did not see him. I am tired and finishing a long day, so perhaps I just missed the name. The list is here: https://archive.org/details/pennsylvaniagerm03penn_2/page/400/mode/2up

The whole point of WikiTree is that we are a collaborative effort, joining together as a genealogical community to continually improve our tree. So if you have any documents or research that can help us sort out who belongs in what family, please jump in.

Do you have any sources for this? There were other Hain/Hen/Hahn/Hons in Ulster Co. NY. They were 1709ers but were not related to Georg Hahn. Joseph would be a very odd name for this family (or any of the 1709ers b. late 17th to early 18th centuries). The closest to Joseph in 18th century German would be Jois or Joes.

Both the Hain Family History and the Annals of Berks County cited above (with links) mention a son Joseph who supposedly "ran off with the Indians", so was not mentioned in the will. They apparently lost touch with him although I have wondered if this was something of a euphemism for the fact that he turned Tory.

Both books clearly show that the name Joseph was used in the next two generations by the family as well. I think the early German equivalent name was Jost, although in the Hain sources cited they always used Joseph.

That involves some major speculation. Because there are zero written records besides one sentence in a 1935 book I guess I'll just agree to disagree. I don't know how many times I've seen "ran off to live with the Indians", even one of my ancestors has the same notation in the same book. Then he turns up again at age 21, clearly connected with his father, having never left Berks County. "Ran off to live with the Indians" etc. was a popular thing to say in the first half of the 20th century when they just didn't know what happened to the child. It conferred some sense of mystery/adventure to the dry family histories. And Jost/Joseph was a common name used by German immigrant families in the area of Hain's Church, I find that about half of the children from that era were named after a godparent, not a relative. The only person from the area that I ever ran across who really "lived with the Indians" was Conrad Weiser, who was a guide/scout for the families who migrated from New York to Berks Co. area and lived with them for a time to learn their customs and languages. That is documented in numerous sources.
