Biography

Isaac was a Friend (Quaker)

Isaac Haines was born in Evesham Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. He was the third child born to Abram Haines and Grace (Hollingshead) Haines Isaac's year of birth is estimated based on his parent's marriage in 1719 and Isaac being the third child (according to "Richard Haines and His Descendants"). The 4th child's birth is known as 1725.

From Richard Haines and His Descendants, p. 183: "Isaac Haines [4th gen] (son of Abram [3], grandson of Richard [2], great grandson of Richard [1]) farmer, of Evesham Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, d. 8 mo. 24, 1795; m. 1758 Deborah Roberts, b. 1735; d. 1806; dau. of John and Mary (Elkinton) Roberts. First intentions of marriage were declared Haddonfield MM, NJ, during 4 mo. 1758. However, this marriage probably did not take place under the care of a Friends' Meeting, as the Women's minutes for Haddonfield MM, 4 mo. 1759, record that Isaac and Deborah Haines had married out of Meeting. There seems to have been other difficulties with Haddonfield MM, but acknowledgment was accepted, 5 mo. 14, 1759."

"Isaac Haines was known as 'lame Isaac.' He was the owner of a female slave, 9 mo. 5, 1776, when it was reported,Evesham MM, NJ, that he intended to give her schooling and to set her at liberty at the age of 18 years. His will was dated Feb. 8, 1789, and was probated Sept. 28, 1795. An inventory of his personal property was made on Sept. 16, 1795."

The children of Isaac and Deborah Roberts Haines are:

  • REUBEN, b. 11 mo. 18, 1758; d. 2 mo. 18, 1762;
  • EDMOND, b. 12 mo. 15, 1760; m. Charlotte Leeds;

I have removed Haines-1623 as the son of Abraham and Sarah (Ellis) Haines. I believe the Isaac you referring to is Isaac, the son of Abram and Grace (Hollingshead) Haines. Abram and Grace's Isaac (Haines-1024) married Deborah Roberts. Isaac and Deborah had 8 children. Their last child, John, b. 1777, married 3 times, the first time was to Jemima Brown.
