Biography

Robert was a Friend (Quaker)

Robert Haines was born in 1736. He was the son of Bethanah Haines and Mary (Unknown) Haines. It is not clear whether Robert was born in New Jersey or in Virginia. Robert's parents were in Virginia in 1747, but it is not known whether they began married life in Bethanah's native state of New Jersey or if they met and married in Virginia.

Robert's parents were not happily married. They agreed to separate due to what might be described in today's words as "irreconcilable differences" on January 11, 1747/8. Robert received a "deed of gift" from his father on the same day.

On February 12, 1767, Robert married Esther (Hiatt) Wright, the daughter of George Hiatt and Martha Wakefield, at the Opeckon Meetinghouse, under the care of Hopewell Monthly Meeting, Virginia. Esther was the widow of Thomas Wright, and she brought several children (possibly as many as 9) to the marriage. Both Robert Haines and Esther Hiatt were Quaker ministers.

Robert and Esther had two children, only one of whom survived infancy. Esther died on March 6, 1778. She is buried at Crooked Run Cemetery in what is now Front Royal, Warren County, Virginia. The children of Robert and Esther were:

  • Allen Haines (1768-1768); and
  • John Haines, Sr (1769-1823), m. Elizabeth Allen.

On April 12, 1780, Robert married Margaret Smith at Crooked Run Meetinghouse, under the care of Hopewell Monthly Meeting, Virginia. Robert and Margaret had eight children who were:

  • Noah Haines (1781-1834), m. Anna Silver;
  • Mary Haines, Jr (1782-1829), m. Jacob McKay;
  • Ann Haines (1783-1784);
  • Amos Haines (1785-1820), m. Mary Whetstone;
  • Robert Haines, Jr (1787-1844), m. Catherine Tremper;
  • Nathan Haines (unknown-1763), m. Rachel McKay;
  • Enos (1792)[1] and
  • Margaret Haines (1793-1862), m. Joseph Canby, M.D.[2]

In 1788, Robert, along with several other land owners, gave land to establish the town of Front Royal, Virginia. Front Royal is now the county seat of Warren County, Virginia.[3]

Robert died in Virginia sometime between January 9th and February 3rd, 1796 (the dates between the writing of his will and the date the will was probated). His burial place is unknown, but it seems likely that he would have been buried near his first wife, Esther, in the Friends' Crooked Run Cemetery.

  1. Since he is not mentioned in Robert's will, he probably died young. OR since Nathan's birthdate and name does not appear in the Quaker records, it's possible that Enos changed his name to Nathan.
