Biography

James was born in Wisconsin about 1862, the second child of Jesse Hall and Edith Mason. Unfortunately the exact date of his birth is not available on any record located at this point. He almost certainly was named for his grandfathers, James Hall and Eliot Mason, but his middle name was usually pronounced "Ellot" or "Ellet." He usually worked as a farmer or farm laborer.

After their marriage, he and Elizabeth, moved to Russel County, Kansas, about the same time as his parents who filed for a Homestead. James may not have obtained land of his own but further research is needed.

His son Clifford was born on June 7, 1886 in Russel County, Kansas.

If his niece, Lora Williams was correct, in his struggle to make a living, he left Elizabeth and the baby with his parents while he searched for work. Obviously unhappy with her situation and missing her own mother, she took the baby and went back to Iowa. (Her mother-in-law, Edith did not like her life in Kansas, either. As soon as she and Jesse lived on the claim long enough to obtain title, she wanted to move back to Iowa and that is what they did. )

Tragically James died from appendicitis while Elizabeth was in Iowa. She did not come back for his funeral.

The exact date of James death has not been determined. Did he die at his parents' home? Where was he buried?

Bernard Hall said that he was told that his uncle, James Ellet [sic] died of a ruptured appendix when he was about twenty-five years old.

The following was copied from a letter from Lora Williams to Bernard and Ada Hall, dated November 17, 1966. She was the daughter of Lovina (Hall) Williams and niece of James Eliot Hall. She probably had memories of him because James lived with her parents at the time the Iowa 1885 census of Dodge Township, Guthrie County, Iowa, was taken. She was born in December 1879. Lora was living with her brother and sister-in-law, Oscar and Ethel Williams in Sunnyvale, California, when she wrote this letter.

"Yes, that is a picture of Uncle James Elliot Hall but we kids called him Uncle Jim. He was mother's oldest brother. The Halls used to live in Iowa and he married a girl there and they all moved to Kansas. After a while Uncle Jim and his wife had a boy named him Clifford. I think the name of their town was Salinas and the county was Russel if I'm not mistaken. Some time later times got pretty hard and Uncle Jim left Aunt Lib and baby with Grandpa and Grandma for awhile so she wouldn't have to stay alone. But she got homesick, took the baby and went to Iowa intending to come back but soon Uncle Jim got sick and died but she didn't come back then. So they laid him to rest without her. She said it would have made her feel too bad."

James' son, Clifford C. Hall was born 7 June 1886 in Russell County, Kansas. If Clifford was a baby when his father died, James may have died late 1886 or in 1887.
