Biography

Major William Hall Died in Military Service during World War I.

William was born in 1866. He was the son of William Hall and Elizabeth Forde.

His mother died soon after he was born. His father remarried.

Ireland Census Date 1901: Recorded in the household of Harriet Roche at Ballintemple House, County Carlow, Ireland. Aged 34 and single.

Occupation: Captain Resurce Officer

He entered the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in November 1885 and served during the Hazara Expedition to Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion in 1891, btaining the Black Mountain Campaign Medal with a clasp. In 1895 he was promoted to the rank of Captain.

He married Olive Edith Kathleen Roche (daughter of Sir Standish Deane O'Grady Roche, 3rd Bt. and Mary Harriet Frances Colmore) on 16 July 1901.

On the 18 October 1902 he was appointed Major in the Reserve of Officers for service in connection with the South African War. On the formation of the Ulster Division he joined the East Belfast Battalion under brevet and rendered particularly valuable service in the training of recruits.

Ireland Census Date 1911: Living with his wife and two children Barbara and Olive in Béal Atha an Tuair, County Kildare, Ireland. Aged 44.

William gained the rank of Major in the 23rd Royal Welch Fusiliers and Reserve Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles. He fought in the First World War.

He passed away in 1917 at the age of 51, accidentally killed as a result of the premature explosion of a bomb during a practice exercise at Newtownards.^[1]

The flag at Narrow Water Castle flew at half-mast as Major Hall’s body left, borne on a gun-carriage. The Church was draped in black. A firing party, consisting of over 100 men, was provided by the 4th Battalion R.I.R. from Newry, who discharged the farewell salute.
