Biography

Jennet Halstead married Lawrence Towneley, Gent., son of Lawrence Towneley, Gent. and Margaret Hartley. They had 1 son (Lawrence, Gent.) and 6 daughters (Margaret, wife of Thomas Riley; Elizabeth, wife of Richard Halstead, Gent., & of Christopher Smith, Gent; Alice, wife of Richard Gray; Ellen, wife of Thomas Chatburne; Anne, wife of Samuel Hoyle, Gent; & Mary, wife of Augustine Warner, Gent.)[1][2]

Jennet Halstead died after 20 June 1623.2,3.[3]

Jennet Halstead Towneley is interred in St Peter's Parish Church & Churchyard, Church Street, Burnley, Lancashire, England. Her online memorial, referencing this resting place, provided 12 October 1594 as her date of birth (later changed to just 1574) and 12 August 1623 as her death date. A request for a photograph of her headstone is awaiting response.[4][5]

Research Notes

Birth: Error on 1594 birth date (daughter Elizabeth Townley-2 born 1598. Changing it to reflect current (as of 31 Dec. 2019) birth year of 1574 causes an error with her mother, Elizabeth Scofield-417, born 1575 (which is probably wrong, since the profile for her husband has birth in 1555).

Death: The profile datafield (as of 2 Jan. 2020) has Jenet's death date as 12 August 1623. The parish register has a record of burial for a Jenet Smith, of Briercliffe, at St Peter, Burnley, Lancashire, England, but it was for 30 October 1696.[6]

If dates are correct, Jennet was married before she was 4 years old and had her first child, Elizabeth, when she (Jennet) was 4 years old.
