Biography

Francis Marion Hamblin was born on November 27, 1839 in Spring Prairie, Walworth County, Wisconsin Territory, United States. His parents were Isaiah Hamblin and Daphne Haynes).

He emigrated to Utah over the Mormon Trail in 1850 with the Aaron Johnson Company.

On April 16, 1859 he married Araminda Crow in Santa Clara, Washington County, Utah.[1] She died during childbirth in 1860.

He married Rhoda Elizabeth Lay on October 21, 1861 in Santa Clara. They had ten children.

  1. Arminda Hamblin was born on August 2, 1862 in Santa Clara.
  2. William Frederick Hamblin was born on March 27, 1865 in Santa Clara.
  3. Francis Marion Hamblin was born on June 6, 1866 in Eagle Valley, Nevada.[2]
  4. John Taylor Hamblin was born on April 6, 1868, died on July 26, 1868, in Eagle Valley.
  5. Sytha Solena Hamblin was born on February 10, 1870 in Eagle Valley.
  6. Mary Ann Hamblin was born on April 14, 1873 in Kanab, Kane County, Utah.[3]
  7. Rhoda Elizabeth Hamblin was born on April 2, 1875 in Kanab.[4]
  8. Rachel Tamar Hamblin was born on March 16, 1877 in Kanab.[5]
  9. Isaiah Hamblin was born on April 1, 1879 in Kanab.[6]
  10. Daphna Jane Hamblin was born on June 23, 1881 in Kanab.[7]

In 1871 and 1872, Francis Marion and his brothers accompanied John Wesley Powell on his second expedition of exploration down the Colorado River.

Francis Marion ran a dairy farm at the Swallow Park Ranch near Kanab. He also loved to dance and sing. An old man remembers him singing:

Then was it well to sever
This heart from thine forever?
I can only answer, Never
Lost, Lost Rosabelle.

Francis Marion passed away at an age of 41 on July 30, 1881 in Kanab, Utah. He is buried in the Kanab City Cemetery.[8]
