It appears that Nancy McKnight-401 (1764-1841) did marry a James Hamilton (Hambleton), but it was not the James who died in McMinn County Tennessee in 1844. The source for the above Nov-1816 marriage (Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002, Ancestry.com ) states that a James Hamilton married a Nancy Childers, not Nancy McKnight. Additionally, in James' Revolutionary War Pension file, he states that he was living in Virginia until 1835, then he moved to Tennessee after his wife died so he could be closer to his children.
The marriage between a different James Hamilton (Hambleton) and Nancy McKnight-401 likely took place in area of Ohio/Brooke County Virginia (now WV) prior to 1794. Nancy's husband James Hamilton died in Brooke County in late Dec-1805 to Jan-1806, (Brooke Co WV, Will Book 1, pp. 58-59). His will lists his wife Nancy and five unnamed children. His will does state that two of the children are boys.
From the 1810 Brooke County census records it appears that Nancy moved in with her father John and later migrated with him to Washington County Indiana in early 1813. Nancy has a land grant for 160 acres in Washington County Indiana in 1820 and is listed as Head of Household in the census that year. It appears that her father is probably living with her in 1820 and probably assisted her in purchasing the 160 acres, since he sold his land in Brooke County and did not purchase land after moving to Washington County.
