Biography

John was born in about 1848 at Emley, Yorkshire, England, and baptised at Emley on the 18th of September, 1848.[1] He was the son of carpenter Joseph Hampshire and Mary Kaye.

in 1851 the family were living in Walton, Yorkshire, Joseph was a journeyman carpenter. They had two children - John, aged 2, and Ann, 1.[2]

By 1861, Joseph had become the managing engineer at the ironworks at Whittington, Derbyshire, and a third child, Edward, had been born at Wombwell. John and Ann were attending school.[3]

In 1863 the family came to Australia where Joseph would become the manager at the Fitzroy ironworks at Mittagong, NSW. They arrived in Melbourne on the ship Great Victoria on the 26th of November, 1863.[4] Mary, John, Anna, and Edward went on to Sydney on the Wonga Wonga, arriving 29 February 1864.[5] Joseph was already in Sydney, having arrived on the 8th of Feb.

The family later moved to Junction Point, NSW, where Joseph was engineer at the Washington Mine.[6]

On the 19th of November, 1870, John's mother Mary discovered Joseph lying dead in the creek by their property at Tuena, NSW, where he had gone to 'wash out a prospect' (pan for gold?).[7] A newspaper report states that John came to help when his mother gave the alarm so he was probably living at the same property.[8]

A George Hill and a John Hampshire were registered as mining for gold and employing 6 men at Junction Point on the 11th of March, 1881.[9]
