Ezekiel Hampton Sr. was born ca 1735 in Orange County, Virginia, an area that rubs shoulders with the Shenandoah Valley in North-Central Virginia. He was one of four named sons of Andrew Hampton: Ezekiel, Ephraim, Zachariah and David.
The area where the Hampton family lived in Virginia was the frontier, and Indian degradations were commonplace and men and boys alike were required to take up arms many, many times to defend their families and possessions.
Ezekiel Hampton, Sr. would have been a part of this life well into his thirties, and his experience would have been an asset to any region in which he lived. It is believed the Hampton family removed to the Yadkin River Valley in North Carolina in the 1750's and would have used the low route through southern Virginia to reach their final destination. This family would eventually settle on the south bank of the Tar River, a major transportation route, which eventually flowed into Pamlico Sound and major seaports, and by common practice they would have harvested pitch and ships' timbers, commodities produced by that area in great quantity.
In August 1760, Andrew Hampton made a gift deed for land in old Granville County, North Carolina, to Ezekiel Hampton. Some time before this, Ezekiel Hampton Sr. would marry Jane Griggs, a daughter of Minus Griggs. The marriage date is unknown, but Bridget Hampton Garland, wife of William Gutridge Garland, is believed to have been born in early 1760 or late 1759. In the records of Old Granville County are recorded many transactions for land involving Ezekiel Hampton, Sr., either as grantor, grantee or witness. He is on the tax lists of Granville County, NC in 1769 with one poll, a white male over 21 years of age.
Rosters in the State Records of North Carolina list Ezekiel Hampton as a soldier in the Company of a Captain Buford in 1771. There are several Adcock men in this Company and it is believed they are family of the John Adcock who sold large chunks of land to Andrew Hampton in March 1775. In February 1773, Ezekiel Hampton Sr. registered his last land transaction in old Granville County, NC, and his wife, Jane Griggs Hampton, released her dower rights to the land sold.
Ezekiel Hampton, Sr. is next found on the tax rolls of Rowan County, NC, in 1778, valued at 200 pounds in specie, in the district of Captain Eakle, this Captain Eakle being tile same person that was the subject of a petition to the General Assembly of North Carolina, in 1768 that was signed by Gutridge Garland. On 5 August of that year, Ezekiel Hampton, Sr. swore the Oath of Allegience to the State of North Carolina in Rowan County, NC, Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions in Salisbury. The oath was required before making land entries actions. His land was described as being on both sides of the road from Salisbury to the Moravian town by Howards Ferry at Reedy Creek. The ferry would have been at the Yadkin River and the Moravian town was Winston Salem.
Ezekiel Hampton Sr. along with Samuel Garland, appear on the tax rolls of Wachovia in 1780. The Wachovia records indicate they were residents in Wachovia between 1775-1783. Ezekiel next appears in Wilkes County, NC, as that County granted him permission in July 1790 to erect a grist mill on Cranberry Creek. In this era, part of his family had established itself in now Grayson County, Virginia, but Ezekiel Hampton Sr. would remain with the balance of the family and eventually arrive in what is now Yancey County, North Carolina.
The Last Will and Testament of Ezekiel Hampton Sr. was proved in Buncombe County, NC, Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Session in 1812, this proving that he had died in late 1811. Strong family tradition has always maintained that he is buried in the cemetery containing the remains of his son, Ezekiel Hampton Jr. on Morning Star Branch in the Jacks Creek Township of Yancey County, NC. On 4 October 1997, The Ruth Davidson Chapter of the DAR and the G.F.R.A. placed a commemorative Revolutionary War Patriot Marker at his grave site.
Ezekiel was born about 1734 in Orange, Virginia. Ezekiel married Jenny Jane Griggs in 1757.[1]
In the 1780 census He was in Rowan County, North Carolina.[2] In the 1810 census Ezekiel was in Buncombe, North Carolina, United States.[3]
Ezekiel died in 1811 and was buriedat Jacks Creek, Buncombe, North Carolina, United Sta.[4]
"Evidence now suggests Ezekiel was the son of that Andrew's cousin Andrew who lived in Granville County, then moved to Georgia."
Birth: 1735 Orange County North Carolina, USA [NOTE added by Willodene Steffen Adams: This should be Orange County, Virginia. Orange County was created in August 1734. There was no Orange County, North Carolina, until 1752. Andrew Hampton and wife Sarah (NOT Kuykendall) were living in Virginia, before county lines changed and before they were "of Brunswick" and Lunenberg.] Death: 1811 North Carolina, USA
REVOLUTIONARY WAR US ARMY REVOLUTIONARY WAR REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOT
Ezekiel Hampton, Sr. has been thought to be son of the Revolutionary War Patriot, Col. Andrew Hampton, buried in Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, N.C. Evidence now suggests Ezekiel was the son of that Andrew's cousin Andrew who lived in Granville County, then moved to Georgia. Granville Co. is on the far northern border with Virginia, while Tryon/Rutherford Co. is in the far south-western border with SC. Further research is pending, including Rutherford (Col.) Andrew's will which I posted on Col. Andrew Hampton's memorial. It lists his children without naming Ezekiel. Much of this site was created by cousin Autumn who sadly has passed. I'll update as I can. If you have any evidence clarifying the two Andrews, please email me. Roger (Added by Willodene Steffen Adams: Please see the Granville County tax lists showing Andrew, his son Ephraim, and his sons Ezekiel, John, and Zachariah, and the militia lists of Capt Andrew Hampton's Company. These lists are NOT for Col Andrew Hampton, who was younger, and in Anson and Rutherford county.)
(Submitted by Autumn) "Ezekiel Jr, d.1848, is buried in the James Bailey Cemetery on Jacks Creek. I have visited this place and he and his wife Susannah's graves are indeed there. They are not on Bailey Hill. Neither is daughter Bridget - she and her husband William Gutridge Garland are in the Old Garland Cemetery at Red Hill. Please change all this, so people won't be searching Bailey Hill futilely."
Jeff and Mark suggest his burial site is unknown, but also added this note: U.S. Veterans Gravesites, ca.1775-2006 about EZEKIEL Sr Hampton Name: EZEKIEL Sr Hampton Service Info.: US ARMY REVOLUTIONARY WAR Birth Date: 1735 Death Date: 1811 Cemetery: James W. Bailey Cemetery Cemetery Address: Burnsville, NC 28714
If anyone has SPECIFIC and DOCUMENTED information clarifying this Burial Site issue with Ezekiel Senior, I'd appreciate seeing it. This may be the site, or it may only be a memorial, but likely it is not the correct site. See: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/yancey/cemeteries/bailey01.txt
From Burton Porter: According to the Daughter's of the American Revolution organization, Ezekiel was born in the state of Virginia. DAR #A132261.

Ephraim Hampton was the son of Andrew Hampton and Sarah, whose surname is NOT Kuykendall. That surname was only a conjecture by Robert Cox, and has been discounted. Her name was mentioned only once in a sale of land, to release her dower rights, and without a surname.
Ephraim's siblings were a daughter Hampton who married Joseph King; Ezekiel Hampton Sr 1737–1811; John Hampton the Loyalist Lieut Col 1745–1843; Joseph Hampton 1746–1803; Zachariah Hampton 1750–1781.
Ephraim and Lemender Harris 1748–1814 had the following children: David Hampton 1774–1826; Ephraim Harris Hampton 1774–1821; Oliver Hampton 1776–1868; Frances "Fanny" Hampton 1780–1843; Robert Hampton 1784–; Lemender Hampton 1788–; Thomas Hampton 1790–; Henrietta "Ritter" Hampton; Martha "Patsy" Hampton.
John David Hampton has NOT been proven to be a son of Ephraim and Lemender. Connie Gilbreath Belcher listed him as a son, based on family tradition, and the supposition that he was the John Hampton who witnessed Ephraim's will. It is unknown which John Hampton was the witness. Ephraim also gave land to "nephew" John Hampton in Rowan County. It is also unknown which John Hampton this was, but it is possible that he was the son of Zachariah Hampton, who is shown as the son and the executor of Zachariah's estate.
The children shown as half siblings, Jonathan Hampton [half], Susannah (Hampton) Eaves [half], Andrew Hampton Jr [half] and Mary (Hampton) Bradley [half], are not siblings of Ephraim. They are some of the children of Col Andrew Hampton of Rutherford County, North Carolina, and his wife Catherine Hyder (Hider.)
