Biography

1691 Birth

Benjamin Hance's birth year is unknown. He was a minor in 1709, so he could not have been born before 1688 and been under 21 in 1709. An estimated birth year of 1691 is shown here, making him 18 in 1709. His parents were in Calvert County, Maryland and he was most likely born in Calvert County.

Marshall estimated Benjamin Hance's birth as about 1691 in Calvert County, Maryland. [1]

Papenfuse estimates his birth as 1684 [2] but this would make him an adult in 1709.

Benjamin Hance was the son of John Hance, born England 1625 and died Calvert County, Maryland 22 May 1709 aged 84, and Mary Sewell, born Calvert County about 1660 and died Calvert County about 1699, aged about 39. His parents married about 1676 in Calvert County. [1]

1738 Death

Papenfuse reports that Benjamin Hance died in 1738[2] while there is a will for Benjamin in 1773. Benjamin had a son, Benjamin born in 1715, who would be 23 in 1738, and it is possible that events referring to a Benjamin after 1738 refer to young Benjamin instead.

1746 Resurvey on Stokley

In 1746 Benjamin Hance resurveyed the Hutchins family property, Stoakley in Calvert County. This must have been Benjamin, son of Benjamin.

Stokley, 700 acres, was initially patented by Woodman Stokley in 1658, who held the Certificate (Patent Record Q, p. 219 0 0 MSA S 1583-1497) and Patent (Patent Record Q, p. 219 0 0 MSA S 1583-1498) [5] The record of Stokley's transfer to Francis Hutchins has not been found. However, in 1746, Benjamin Hance became the developer/owner of Stoakley, by now 1346 acres, with a Certificate Pat as Resurvey on Several Tracts (Patent Record TI 1, p. 370 0 0 MSA S 1583-1495 and Patent (Patent Record BT and BY 3, p. 697 0 0 MSA S 1583-1496[5]

1773 Will and Death

Benjamin Hance's will was dated 20 May 1773 and proved 7 Dec 1773 in Calvert County. Therefore his death occurred between the two dates.
